W. S. STAPLEY. SOCKET OAP.
APPLICATION FILED 0GT.22, 1907.
ivit-neooca PATENTED APR. 14, 1908.
,ject to are earner our WILLIAM S. STAPLEY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, .ASSIGNOR- TO BRIDGEPORT BRASS COMPANY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
seems-oer.
Application filed October 22, 1907. Serial No. 398,608.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. STAPLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut have invented a new and useful Socket-Cap, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of electric socket shells and has for its obrovide socket caps which shall be neat and attractive in appearance, perfectly rigid in use and so constructed as to reduce the cost of production to the minimum.
With these and other objects in view I have devised the novel socket cap of which the following descri tion in connection with the accompanying rawing is a specification, reference characters being used to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the completed socket cap; Fig. 2 an inverted plan view thereof; Fig 3 a section of the body as formed; Fig. 4 an inverted plan view of the body; and Fig. 5 is a section of the hub before attachment to the body.
My novel socket cap comprises two parts only, a sheet metal body indicated by 10 and a hub or bushing indicated by'll which may be formed in any suitable manner as from a rod. The special configuration of the body is of course wholly unimportant so far as the principle of the invention is concerned. As shown, it may be described as broadly domeshaped. It is provided at the top, or apex of the dome, with a central opening indicated by 12, the metal surrounding the opening being turned inward to form a flange 13. The opening and the flange are in przurtice ,inadc olygonal in form. In the present instancel lave shown a t\\'elvcsided opening and flange, that is an opening and flange formed by means of a dodecahodral punch. At the lower end of the hub is a flange 14 which jusi asses within the flange on the body and tho ower end of which is beveled as at 15. The hub is also shown provided with an internal screw thrcnd indicated by 16, although this screw thread is incidental so far as the resent invention is concerned.
ling, flange 14 on the hub is passed within flange 13 on the body, lhc lop of thc body resting against the shoulder 17 at the lmso ol' the flange on the hub, and then thc flange on the hub is subjected to the action of a polygonal alternately grooved and ribbed spreading and closing punch which curls the flange Specification of Letters Patent.

on the hub over outward and with it the flange on the body and closes the two down upon the inner side of the to of the body. I thusclamp the edge of tie body surrounding opening 12 between the closed down flanges and the shoulder, flange 13 on the body being folded against the under side of the body and forming an additional thickness of themetal of the body at the joint, thus providing a maximum amount of strength at just the point where strength is required. In practice, the ribs on the punch (not shown) correspond with the planes of the polygonal opening and flange on the body. (oincidcntally with the outward curling oi the flange on the hub, the metal of said flange is forced into engagement with the planes of the polygonal opening and flange on the body, therebylocking the hub to' the body in such a manner as to prevent the possibility of rotation ofthe body on the hub when the cap is screwed tight upon a nipple. 1
Having thus described my-'invention I claim:
l. A socket cap comprising a body having a central opening and surrounding said opening an inwardly turned flange and a hub having a flange adapted to pass within the flange on the body and a shoulder against which the top of the body rests-the parts'being locked together by spreading; the flange on the hub and clamping the edge of the body surrounding the opening and also the flange on the body between the flange-on the hub and the shoulder.
2. A socket cap comprising a body having; a ccnlral polygonal opening and surrounding said opening an inwardly turned polygonal flange and a hub having a flange adapted to pass within the flungc on the body and borclcd at its lower end and a shoulder against which the top ol' the body rests, the parts being locked against rolnlioll by spiral-ling the flange on the hub and clumping lhc cdgc ol' lhe body surrmunlinp lh'c opcninp and also th ange on the body bctwccn the flungc on tho hub and thc shoulder and forming in asscmgrooxos in tho upset hub flanp'c corrcs )ondinc' with tho plnncs ol' lhc flange on the l)()(l ln lcstimony whcrcol' l allix my signature, in .prcscucc ol' lwo nilncsscs.
