Suitably supported in bearings at a point beneath the yimpression-cylinder and at that side of the machine at which the toothed wheelZJ-is located is a suitable short spindle or shaft o", upon which is held or supported, in a manner to turn, a vertically-disposed lever c, the upper end of the said lever being notched at e', so as to be engaged by the tooth Z, as will be explained.- The said lever c is formed or provided on its inner side at or near each end thereof with a lug or projection e2, which lugs or .projections fit into or enter corresponding notches or openings c3, formed at corresponding` points in the vertically-disposed arms d of a three-armed lever CZ, thethird arm of said lever CZ being indicated at Z3 and projecting forwardly and upwardl y at an angle of about forty-live degrees, (450.-) rlfhe said lever (Zis formed with or attachedto a hub D, which is movable vlongitudinally on'the shaft or spindle r, and the said lhub is provided with a groove D', in which is received the pins or lugs s, carried by the forked or bifurcated end f of a swinginglever f', which is providedwith a hub f2 and has its bearing or point of oscillation on a stud or pin f3, suitably secured in place upon the framework. The opposite end of said swinging or-oscillating lever f is provided with a projection g3, -which enters the cam,-groove g4 of a cam or eccentric g, which latterhas its bearing` upon `the shaft g,\the same as does-the enlarged toothed wheel a', hereinbefore referred to. The arm Z3 of the lever CZ is provided at its end with a pin a', which supports a roller a2 on each side of said lever-arm, and accordingly as the levers c and cZ arein or out of the proper positions toactuate and stop the.impression-cylinder one of said rollers CL2 will be in engagement with a cam-groove e and -the other will be received bya slot ina bridge d5.
The construction and relation which the le` versc and CZ bear to each other is such that they are never disengaged from each other butare always in a position to operate conjointly or in unison, as will appear. Also formed with the said carriage on its upper edge at the side corresponding to the toothed wheel b is a rack b2, which engages said toothed wheel immediately the latter has been actuated or started, as about to be explained. Vhen the carriage y has arrived at the end of its return stroke, or when the same is in the position indicated at Fig. l and is about to be sent forward again, t-he eccentric g, acting upon the lever f', moves the three-armed lever CZ into such position that the inner one of the rollers a2, carried at the end of the arm Z3 thereof, will be carried into the forward end of the cam-groove e, and then as the carriage starts forward through the medium of the operating mechanism described, the said lever CZ will be brought forward on its axis 1', the arm Z3 being first thrown downward by reason of the shape and direction of the cam-groove, and the lever e being also rocked forward by virtue of the described connection of this lever with the said lever d. As the carriage g/ continues to move forward the said levers e and (Z will be gradually restored to their original position by virtue of the intermediate inclined portion E of the cam-groove, so that by the time the carriage hasreached thc limit of its forward movement-and the roller a2 of the third arm of the lever (Z is carried into the straight portion E' of the cam-groove the said lever (Z will be in readiness to be moved or shifted on the spindle r, so as to be carried out of engagement with the camgroove. The engagement is broken at about the ltime the carriage reaches the end of its'forward movement, and on the return movement of the carriage the cam-groove has no effect uponthe levers. lVhen -the arm d3 of the llever CZ is thrown downward by the operation above described, the connection of the upper end of the lever c with the tooth Z of the toothed wheel Z) gives to the impressionroller an impetus or initial start, and said wheel Z) becomes im mediately engaged by the upper rack b2, and the impression-cylinder is carried around and over the stone or type-surface, in an obvious manner.
l may employ any suitable devices for feeding the sheets to be printed upon 'to the impression-cylinder, as well as any preferred form of devices for gripping or taking'hold of the sheets and holding them in position while being carried around by the impressioncylinder; but I have preferably omitted any such devices herein. In like manner l may employ any preferred or conventional form of inking rollers or devices, together with dis` -tributing and moistening devices; but have also purposely omitted to show such devices action of the impression-roller is obtained through the medium of devices which are ex- It will be observed that the desired l roo ceedingly simple in construction and arrangement, and it will also be seen that the action of said devices is at all times perfectly reliable.
Located above the impression-cylinder a a set of delivery devices for the sheets is employed; but inasmuch as the same forms no part of my present invention, and could be substituted for any of the approved conventional forms of such devices, no specific mention thereto need herein be made.
Without limiting myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement shown and described, I claim as my invention- 1. In a printing-press the combination with the impression-roller having the pinion provided with the lateral tooth the lever c in movable 'connection with said tooth, the threearmed lever d movably connected with said lever c, a reciprocating carriage having a rack engaging the pinion of the cylinder and provided vvith a cam-groove, and means for shifting the said lever d into and out of engagement with said groove at the completion of the forward and return movements of said carriage respectively, substantially as described.
In a printing-press the combination of the reduced impression -cylinder provided with the pinion having the lateral tooth, the lever c vertically disposed and in movable connection with said tooth, the lever d in movable connection with said lever c and having the forwardly-proj ectin g inclined arm carrying a roller, a reciprocating carriage having a rack engaging the pinion and provided with a cam-groove, and means for shifting the lever d into engagement with said cam-groove at the limit of each return movement of the carriage, substantially as described.
3. In a printing-press, the combination of theimpression-cylinder provided with the pinion carrying the lateral tooth, the vertically-disposed lever c notched at its upper end to engage said tooth and having the lugs on its inner side, the three-armed lever d having its vertical arms notched to movably engage said lugs, and having its forwardly-inclined arm provided with a roller, a reciprocating carriage having a rack engaging the pinion and provided with a cam-groove in which the roller works, and means for shifting the lever d into engagement with said cam-groove at the limit of each return movement of the carriage, substantially as described.
4. In a printing-press, the combination of the impression-cylinder provided with the pinion having the lateral tooth, the lever c constructed at its upper end to movably engage said tooth and having the lugs on its inner side, the three-armed lever d having its vertical arms notched to movably engage said lugs, the reciprocating carriage having the cam grooved and operating said lever d, the movable bearing, the pivoted lever f furcated at its forward end to embrace said bearing, and the eccentric g having the cam-groove, the said latter-named devices operating to shift the lever d, substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
5. In a printing-press, the combination With the impression cylinder provided with the pinion having the lateral tooth, of the lever c in movable connection with said tooth and having the lugs on its inner side, the threearmed lever CZ having notches in movable connection with said lugs, a reciprocating carriage, means on the carriage for throwing the levers forward on their axes and gradually restoring them to normal position, and means for shifting said lever d into and out of operative engagement on the completion of the forward and return movements respectively of said carriage, substantially as described.
