PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE H. HOLMES, OF ST. LOUIS. MISSOURI.
PRIVNTINGJMIACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,059, dated September 13, 1881.
' Application filed July 11, 1881. (No model.)
To all'whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEssE H. HoLMEs, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and use-,'
- ful Improvementtin Printing-Machines, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a printingpress having the improvement; Fig. 2, a lontudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 a transverse vertical section, of the improved press.
The same letters denote the same parts.
The present invention is an improvementin that class of cylinder printing-machines wherein an impression in different colorsis obtained.
The special aim of the invention is to provide an improved means for obtaining an impression in two colors by means of a flat rather than a circular form, printing directly from the types. -It consists, mainly, in providing the cylinder with two impression-surfaces, which are spaced apart upon the cylinder a distance not less than the length of one of the surfaces, and employing, in combination therewith, a double or two-part bed, the bed having a reciprocating movement past the revolving cylinder, the parts of the bed and the forms being spaced apart a distance not less than the length of one of the impression-surfaces, the forms upon the two parts respectively of the bed being inked in different colors and the surfaces of the cylinder being-presented successively to each part of the bed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a printing-press, which,'saving as modified by the present improvement, is substantially of the usual construction.
B represents the impression-cylinder. It is furnished with two impression-surfaces, O and D, arranged upon opposite sides of the cylinder, and each occupying not over one-fourth of the lateral surface of the cylinder. Each of the depressions E and 13 therefore extends over at least onefourth of the lateral surface of the cylinder. The latter rotates in the bearin gs b, in the direction indicated by the arrows, Figs. 1 and 2.
G H represent a two-part bed, that holds the form to be printed, the forms being inked in different colors by their respective fountains, andbeing suitably relatively arranged to produce the desired impression. The cylinder rotates constantlyin one direction. The bed GrH hasa reciprocating movement beneath the cylinder, moving at the same rate as the cylinder.
The inking-fountains g and hare placed one on each side of the cylinder B, ata distance from the point B not less than the length of one of the parts G H, so that each fountain-roller pression-say iii bluefrom the form on the 'part H. After this last-named impression has been taken the bed moves back, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2, from left to right, to its original position, the part H in this backward movement being presented to the depression E, the space between the parts-G and H (or the forms respectively upon the parts G and H) to the impression-surface O, and the part G to the depression F. As the bed starts again to the left the impression-surface D will be presented to the form on the part G, and in so doing the sheet will take its second impression in red, and is then ready to be discharged from the cylinder at b, having passed over both forms and the printing having been completed. Meanwhileanew sheethas been taken on the-surface O and the operation is repeated that is, at every one and one-half revolution of the cylinder B a sheet is printed in two colors.
By means of suitabie appliances (not shown, as their construction is familiar) the customary gripers will be worked to close at the point K each time the bed part G commences to pass under the cylinder toward the left, and the gripers will open atthe point b to discharge M upon the shaft 122, and turning with the gear points K and b to receive and discharge the sheets.
In operating the above-described mechanism it is necessary to provide for keeping the inipression-surfaces of the cylinder from contact with the forms on the parts Gr H during the movement of the bed from left to right, and also in the forward movement of the bed, saving' as above described. This is effected by spacing the surfaces Gr H apart a distance not less than the length of one of the surfaces 0 D, and so as to leave a depression between them, and fastening them rigidly to a base, g, which is moved reciprocating] y beneath the cylinder, (or, what is equivalent thereto, by spacing the forms apart a distance-not less than the length of one of the surfaces (JD upon a plane single bed,) the bed being furnished with the rack L, and being moved to and fro, as described, by means of mechanism similar to that in use in printing-presses for moving the bed, the gear N, driving the pinion 0, which is attached to the shaft 0, upon the inner end of which shaft is the pinion P, which engages with and moves the rack .L and bed G H..
I hereby disclaim the subject-matter of my pending application for Letters Patent for an I improvement in printing-presses, the serial number of which is 18,874.
I claim- 1. In a printing-in achine, an impression-cylinder having twoimpression-surfaces arranged directly opposite each other upon the cylinder, and spaced apart thereon a distance not less than the length of one of the surfaces, in combination with a double or two-partflat bed, the two parts of the bed being spaced apart a distance not less than the length of one of the cylinder impression-surfaces, and the bed having a reciprocating movement past the cylinder, for the purpose described.
2. In a printing-machine, the impression-cyl inder B, having the two impression-surfaces O and D and the depressions E and F, arranged, extended, and spaced apart, as described, in combination with the. two-part bed G H, havingthe parts G and H made fiat and rigidly attached to a single flat base, 9, and spaced apart thereon, as described, and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
