UMBRELLA-CARRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,053, dated April 28, 1896.

Serial No. 558,598. (Nomodelo T0 at whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osEPH BOLT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Granbury, in the county of Middlesex and State of New-Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to supports for umbrellas, which are adapted to be connected with the body of a person, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective device of this class, which maybe readily attached to or detached from the person, and which is adapted to support an umbrella, so as to leave the arms free; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in the form, construction, combination and arrangements of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a person provided with my improved umbrella-support, showing also the umbrella in position; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the support.

In the practice of my invention I provide a wire frame A, comprising a vertical portion or extension B,the sides of which are parallel and the top of which is provided with a cross-bar O, and the lower end of which is provided with a transverse portion D, with one end, E, of which is connected abelt F, and with the other end, E, of which is connected a buckle G, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The side bars of the vertical extension B are united by means of bands H, which are curved inwardly, as shown, and between the bands H is placed a wire loop, spring, or catch K, formed by bending the central portion of the wire so as to form the springer catch, and then winding the separate ends of the wire around one side of the extension, as shown at L, after which each end is carried over and secured to the opposite wire, as shown at M, that portion of.the wires between the sides of the extension being curved backward, so as to correspond with the bands I-I.

Connected with the upper end or crossbar C of the extension is a band or strap N, the free end of which is adapted to be connected with the belt F by means of a button or buckle, as shown at O. t

The operation will be readily understood when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

The band F is passed around the body, as shown in Fig. 1, and secured in place. by means of the buckle G, and the strap or band Nis then passed over the shoulder and down to the belt, as shown in Fig. 2. The handle P of the umbrella R is then passed through or beneath the spring-catch K, where it is firmly held in position by said spring-catch and the bands H, as will be readily understood.

The wire frame A may be formed in any desired manner by bending the wire into the form described, or two or more wires may be employed for this purpose, if desired, and two or more of the catches K may be also employed, if found necessary, and it will be readily understood that by means of this construction the position of the umbrella is vertically adjustable, and it is evident that other changes in and modifications of the construction shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope thereof.

My improvement will be of special advantage to mail-carriers,railway-switchmen, railway-trackmen, and others who are compelled to be exposed to the weather and who at the same timeare under the necessity of using both hands, although, as will be understood, the use thereof is not limited to these classes.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire -to secure by Letters Patent A support for umbrellas, consisting of the wire frame having a vertical and horizontal portion constructed of a single piece of wire, the strap or belt adapted to engage each end my invention I have signed my name, in presof said horizontal portion, and to be secured ence of two Witnesses, this 27th day of July,
