Be it kn own that I, FRANZ ScHINnLEn, morchant, residing at Habelschwerdt, in the Province of Silesia, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Taking Measurements of the Human Body for Patterns for Garments, of which the followingis a specification.

The subject of this invention is an apparatus for taking measurements of the human body, and at the same time fixing the measurements required for cutting patterns of garments.

The main features of this invention comprise an apparatus made of separate elements or members, which are placed upon those parts of the body from which the measurements are to be taken.

All the parts of the apparatus are arranged in such a manner that they are adjustable and fixable, so that all that is necessary is to lay the apparatus, after it has been taken away from the body, upon a surface of paper or cloth, to which the points and measurements taken from the body can then at once be transferred. WVhile hitherto it has been left to the judgment of the cutter to shape the cutting according to the measurements taken with a tape-measure, apparatus accord ing to this invention not only enables the measurements to be fixed by figures, but also in their proper places, so that the out of the garment must under all circumstances be correct and sure.

In all systems of measuring the measurement of the half upper width forms the base. After this measurement has been determined a point is always fixed which is oneseventh of the half upper width distant from the point of the uppermost cervical vertebra. This is the point where the seam between the collar and the back part is to lie. Upon the correct position of this point the correct fit of the article of clothing depends.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows the apparatus applied to a body, and Fig. 2 to a paper or cloth surface.

a denotes a tape-measure, which serves as a base-line for this apparatus. This tape a is placed upon that part of the body where the measurement for the lower Width is to be taken. At a right angle to this base-line a part b is fittedhorizontally movable on same, and also vertically adjustable in a tube and bearing at its upper portion a turnable bent part c. This turnable part c, which forms a right angle with the part 19, passes under the armpit with its vertical side. The horizontal side of this bent part is adjustable in a tube and may be shortened or lengthened, as required. When this side part is placed against the upper arm of the body, this fixes the thickness of the arm on the width of the armhole.

The correct working of the whole apparatus depends upon the correct position of the part b with regardto the line of base. For this reason the part b is provided with an anglebar 2', which is laid against the base-line a, so that the part b may form exactly a right angle with the base-line a. The above-mentioned bent part 0 serves for fixing all the measurements which are necessary for forming the sleeve-hole-namely, the projection of the armhole, the depth of the armhole, and the point of the side scam in the circumference of the armhole. Above the part 0 there is, furthermore, joined to part b a curved bar (1, which is horizontally adjustable. This bar 01 carries two adjustable bars e and f for fixing exactly the middle h of the neck circumference and the point 9 in the neck circum-. ferenoe for the shoulder-seam. In conjunction with these two measurements the beforementioned one seventh of the half upper width exactly determines the form of the neckhole. Part e is vertically and horizontally adjustable on bar d and part fvertically. The curved bar d, as well as the parts carried by it for determining the neck measurements, are flexible and are adjusted in such a man ner that the points of these two members e and factually touch points 9 and h before mentioned, so that thereby an exact idea is produced of the carriage of the body. (See Fig. 1.) If a person carries himself stooping forward, the two points 9 and It will be in a lower position, whereas in the opposite case, if a person carries himself upright, these top parts will become correspondingly longer and the points be in a higher position. By the apparatus the points required for the halfcircumference are securely fixed.

When the apparatus is exactly adjusted, it is taken off and by turning the part c all the points fixed are brought into one plane. The apparatus is laid upon the paper or cloth surface so that part 1?, band a, and terminal points g and h of the two bars 6 and f are lying fiat upon the surface. After this the measurements for the armhole and for the neck circumference may, Without more ado, be transferred onto the surface. (See Fig. 2.)

The apparatus shown in the drawings may be provided with other parts to serve for fixing the other measurements required for the width of the back and length of the waist, as will be understood.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A measuring apparatus for tailors comprising a tape-measure serving as a base-line, a part b fitted horizontally movable on said tape-measure and vertically adjustable in a tube, and arranged at a right angle to the base-line, said part 13 carrying at the height of the armhole a turnable part 0, both parts forming a right angle a horizontally-adjustable curved bar d, joined to part b and carryin g flexible vertically-adj ustable bars e and f for the purpose set forth.
