GRASS-CARRIER FOR LAWN-MOWERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,731, dated April 21, 1896.

Be it known that I, ROSWELL F. KRAUSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of HM- nois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grass-Carriers for Lawn-Mowers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved dinary 1awn-mower combined. Fig. 2 is a perspective representation of the grass-can rier removed from the lawn-mower; Fig. 3, a top or plan view of one of the clamping devices, by two of which the forked end of the handle to lawn-mower is properly to be adjusted and secured. Fig. at is a plan view of the two-part metal bottom to the carrier, with the canvas sides and ends removed and a portion of the bottom represented to be formed of open-work or wire-cloth. Fig. 5 is a side elevation ofthe clamp shown at Fig. 3, looking in the direction of dart .610, Fig. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section of the bottom of the carrier on line 2, Fig. 4:.

The purpose of this invention is to provide grass cut by the lawn-mower and carrying it as fast as it is cut, and also to provide novel, simple, and effectual means for adjusting the carrier to the lawn-mower and novel means for expanding and contracting the width of the front of the bottom of the carrier to suit the different lengths of lawn-mowers.

The novelty and construction will befully comprehended by reference to the following detail specification.

At Fig. 1, J represents one of the hangers which supports one end of the roller 1, its upper end being secured to the frame of the mower in the ordinary manner at K. The

pass through holes m min the bottom at Fig. 4, and are thus held jointedly in place. The bottom, preferably, is formed of two sheets of metal or wire-cloth M N. If wire-cloth be employed, a solid central plate B should be secured thereto, that a slot 01 may be formed therein, that one section of the two-part bottom may slide on the other and be secured by a set-screw b, which extends into a nut at the under side of the bottom. If the bottom be made of two sheets of plate metal, a like slot d and set-screw will be employed. At three edges of the bottom the plate metal or wirecloth, as the case may be, is turned over, as shown at D, Figs. 4 and 6, and the canvas A L, forming the sides and back of the carrier, is clamped between the two metal portions. The other portions of the canvas are secured to the rod or wire B B B O O by stitching in the ordinary manner. The front portion Q Q of the bottom is turned up to form a flange to keep the grass in the carrier, and the flange is formed to overlap by the reduction of so much of the under portion of the inner flange as passes onto the plate N. This construction preserves at all times a full front flange, notwithstanding the spread of the front of the bottom.

E represents the handle to the lawn-mower, which is provided with forked-arm portions F F, the end portions of which are parallel to each other and parallel to the handle, and they operate inside of the wire-frame portions 0 O by the following means to bring the boltholes in their end portions to the bolt-hole K, Figs. 1 and 2. The clamps each consist of a frame portion Q, supporting two hooks a a, which are each fitted to grasp the outside of the canvas-covered wire portions O O of the carrier-frame. the frame Q of each clamp,whereby the forked portions F F, bearing against the portions 0 O, are clamped tightly in place at such a height on the portions O O that the forked portions F F are conveniently connected to the frame of the mower at K.

Having thus fully described my invention,- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-' A set-screw P is tapped into for lawn-mowers, consisting of a receptacle having a flexible upper frame and provided with a bottom composed of two overlapping pieces adjustable laterally upon each other, means for holding said pieces together in adjustable positions and a clamping device for attaching the carrier to the mower.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a grass-carrier to be used as an attachment for lawn-mowers consisting of a receptacle having a bottom composed of tWo overlapping pieces adjustable laterally upon each other, means for holding said pieces in adjustable positions, flexible sides and rear end, a frame having substantially horizontal portions attached to the upper edges of the sides and rear end and substantially vertical portions ending in hooks at their free ends, the outer front corners of said bottom portions of the receptacle being provided with holes adapted to receive the hooks, and means for securing the attachment to a lawn-mower.
