SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,454, dated April 14, 1896.

in the county of Pipe Stone and State of Min* nesota,have invented a new and useful Ohurn, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to churns, and has for its object to provide a simple and improved construction and arrangement of means for withdrawing the butter from the churn after the completion of the operation, the buttermilk being previously removed Without displacing the butter.
Further objects and advantages of this invention Will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a churn constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the butter-pan detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a churn-body provided with supporting-legs 2 and having false side walls 3, between which and the main Walls of the body are the water-chambers 4, accessible at their upper sides through inlet-openings 5, fitted with plugs 6 and provided at their lower sides with conductors 7, communicating with an outlet-pipe 8, also fitted with a plug 9. Secured to the inner surface of the rear end wall is a bearing-plate 10, provided with a vertical series of bearings 11 for the rear ends of the dasher-spindles 12, and arranged in a vertical slot 13 in the front end wall is a bearing-plate 14, held in place by means of screws or bolts l5, engaging said end wall at the sides of the slot, said front bearing-plate being provided with bearings 1G for the front ends of the dasher-spindles. Stuffing-boxes 17 are formed in connection with the bearings to prevent leakage of the contents of the churnbody. The spindles of the dasher arev extended beyond the bearings, and keyed thereon are pinions 18 for communicating motion from one pinion to the other and receiving I motion thereby from a master-gear 10. The Be it known that I, HENRY KAHL, a citizen gear is mounted upon a stub-shaft 20, supported by a bracket 21 above the uppermost dasher-spindle, said stub-shaftbeing adapted for vertical adjustment by means of -a reduced stud 22 at its inner end fitted in a vertical slot 23 in said bracket, a nut being threaded upon the stud to secure the shaft at the desired adjustment.
The dashers are constructed ofA a spindle provided,approximately in contact with the inner surfacesv of the bearing plates, with collars 24, between which the v spindles' are longitudinally slotted, as shown at 25, and the dasher-blades formed in sections are arranged in said slots and secured by means of transverse rivets or keys 26. The spindle of the uppermost dasher is extended beyond the rear end of the churn-body through a stuffing-box 27 and is fitted with a balance or f'ly wheel 28. The legs at the front end of the churn-body are extended above the upper edge thereof to form standards 29 for the support of the bracket to which the stub-shaft is secured, and the legs at the rear end of the churn-body are extended above the upper edge thereof to form studs 30, and the lid or cover 31 is arranged at its front and rear ends between. vsaid standards and studs to prevent lateral displacement. Furthermore, the lid or cover is provided with a rabbeted edge, which fits shoulders 32, formed at the sides of the churnbody, suitable packing 33 being arranged at the angles of the rabbeted edges of the lid or cover to insure an air-tight joint. The lid or cover is secured in place by means of turnbuttons or clamps 34, pivoted to the upper surface of the lid and adapted to engage slotted keepers .35 on the ends of the churn-body. Said turn-buttons are provided with handles 36 to facilitate engagement and disengagement thereof.
Fitted in an opening in the rear end of the churnbody, with its lower side flush with the bottom thereof, is a butter pan or drawer 37, adapted to entirely cover thefloor of the cream compartment or receptacle of the churn-body and receive the butter after the buttermilk has been drawn off through an outlet 38 at the front end of the churn-body, said outlet being fitted with a screw-plug 39. The butter- IOO milk passes to the outlet-tube through an opening 40, formed in the end of the butter pan or drawer, and the sides of said pan or drawer are detached from the ends and are dared outwardly to bear firmly against the sides of the cream-receptacle and thereby prevent butter from passing between the sides of the pan and the walls of the body. The outer end of the butter pan or drawer is provided with a face-plate 4l to bear against the outer surface of the churn-body, suitable compressible packing 42 being arranged in contact with the inner surface of said plate to secure a water-tight joint, and said pan or drawer is held in place and the packing is compressed to insure a water-tight joint by means of a locking-lever 43, provided with beveled ex tremities 44, engaging cam-catches 45, located at opposite ends of the face-plate. Said lever is provided with handles 46, whereby it may be operated with facilityto secure or release the pan or drawer.
From the above description it will be seen p that by removing the plug from the extremity of the outlet-tube the buttermilk, subsequent v to the churning operation, may be withdrawn and thereby deposit the butter in the pan or v drawer, after which said pan or drawer may be released and withdrawn and the removal 1 of the butter from the churn thereby accomplished effectively and without loss of time. 1
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I 1 claim is l. In a churn, the combination with a recepl tacle, dashers, and operating mechanism therefor, of a drawer removably fitted in an l opening in one end of the receptacle and resting upon the floor of the same, the sides of the drawer terminating below the plane of the lowermost dasher to provide for the introduction and removal of the drawer without dismounting the dashers, locking devices for securing the drawer in place to prevent leakage through the opening in which it is fitted, the drawer having an outlet-opening com1nunicating with a corresponding plugged opening in the receptacle, substantially as speciiied.
2. In a churn, the combination with a' receptacle provided near its bottom with a buttermilk-outlet, a dasher, and operating mechanism, of a shallow pan or drawer arranged upon the bottom of the receptacle below the plane of the lowermost point of the dasher and provided with opposite parallel outwardly-flared spring sides adapted to bear at their upper edges against the inner surfaces of the sides of the receptacle and capable of yielding to facilitate introduction and removal, the pan having an outlet by which it may be drained through the buttermilk-outlet, substantially as speciied.
3. In a churn, the combination with a churnbody having a buttermilk-outlet, of a butter pan or drawer fitted in the churn-body at its bottom and provided atone end with an opening communicating with the buttermilk-outlet, a face-plate carried by the pan or drawer and adapted to bear against the outer surface of the churn-body, and means for locking the pan or drawer in place, the same comprising a pivotal locking-lever having terminal bev eled extremities, and cam-catches secured to the churn-body for engagement by the beveled extremities of said lever, substantially as specified.
