v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. M. DU'BURN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,839, dated June 26, 1866.
To all whom 'it may camera:
Be it known that I, A. M. DUBURN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Lantern 5 and I do hereby deelare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved lantern.- Fig."2 is a View of the bottom of the lamp, showingtherecess iorturningtheratchet. Fig. 3 is a perspective representation of the lower part of the lamp-frame, showing1 the hinged part open for removing' the chimney. Fig. 4 is a central sectional elevation of the hot-tom of theylamp, showing' the manner of securing' the guard-frame to the same and the recess made for Operating' the ratehet used for regulating` the wiek.
The object of my invention is to provide convenient means for securi'ng,` the common lantern-chimney in the frame so that it shall not be liable to be broken by pressure, and yet so that it may he taken out at the bottom of the frame in a convenient manner; also, to provide a recess in the bottom of the lante'rn, by means of which the ratchet'wheel used for regulating the wiek may be more eonveniently operated; and, further, to arrang'e the various parts of the lantern necessary to aeeomplish this so that the cost of manufacture shall not be augmented.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will descrihe the method of construction and operation.
A is the top, B the chimney, and l) D E the guards, of the common lantern. H and H' is the lower rim, which I make in two parts. The part H is permanently secured to the guards and remains stationary. The part H' is secured to the short guard or part Z, which is joined to the guard E, by means of the hinge K, in such a manner as to allow the part H' to be opened far enough to remove the chimney B from the lamp-frame.
J shows small pieces of wire, made fast to the ends of the part H', passing inside of the ends of the part H, and used for the purpose of holding` thejoint F even, as shown at Fig. 1, when the two parts are shut together.
P is the small nib or projection attached to the part Ha, which passes under the rim a and holds one side of the lamp-frame to the bottom E.
R shows the knob by means of which the catch S is made to hold the opposite side of the rim to the bottom. By this arrangement the parts H H' are held tirmly in place when the lantern is adj usted for use.
M, Fig. 4. shows the space allotted for oil, and m' m m the recess for the convenience of Operating' the ratchet 0, which passes down through an opening` made in the plate m'. By means of this recess the ra-tchet can he turned in either direction more eonveniently than if it projected outward from the lower rim of the lantern, and, fnrthermore, it is not liable to be broken. i
The material. used is the same in every respect as that now employed in the manufacture of lan terns.
Operation: VVhen it is required to remove the chimney the bottom must be taken off by mean's of the knol) and catch R S. The part H' can then be swung` open, as shown at Fig. 3, and the` chimney taken out at the bottom. By rcversing` the operation the lantern can be adjusted as shown at Fig. 1.
lt will require no explanation for working the ratchet in the recess.
Having` thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- -ters Patent, is
1. The part H', secured by the hinge K, when constructed as described, and used for the purpose set forth.
2. The recess m m' m, for the purpose set forth.
A. M. DUBURN. Witnesses:
G. L. OHANGEY, ALBERT HAYWARD.
