SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,308, dated April 14, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, ROBERT L. PEYToN, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Stock ton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Stands; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in display-stands such as are used for displaying goods in show-windows of stores; and it consists in the peculiar construction, novel combination and adaptation of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a left-hand side elevation of my improved display-stand arranged so as to form successive shelves. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same having the arms and boards arranged in a semicircle. Fig. 4 is a detached side elevation of one of the joints of the boards and arm. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts through out the several views.

A represents the foundation or foot-rest of my display-stand, and B represents a hollow standard which is rigidly attached to the footrestA near the rear edge of the same. A rod or standard 0 is inserted in the hollow standard B, such rod O being adapted to slide vertically in such standard B and to attain any desired vertical position by means of a thumbscrew D, which is inserted in the back side of the standard B and adapted to impinge on the rod 0.

E represents horizontal arms which extend laterally from the standards 13 and C, such arms E being adapted to slide vertically on such standards and having a thumb-screw F inserted in each of such arms E, which thumb-screws are adapted to impinge upon the surface of the standards B and 0, thus maintaining the arms E in any desired vertical position.

At suitable intervals on the topside of the arms E spools or lugs G are pivotally mounted, such spools G being maintained in. position by means of thumb-screws H, which impinge upon the under side of the arms E. The spools G are each provided with an opening I, which are adapted to receive the rear ends of hollow arms J, which are adapted to slide horizontally in such openings 1. Such arms J are maintained in rigid position by means of thumb-screws K, which are inserted in the top side of the spools G and adapted to impinge on the hollow arms J.

Extension-arms L are inserted in the 1101- low arms J, which arms L are adapted to slidehorizontally in the arms J, such arms L being maintained in any desired horizontal position by means of thumb-screws M.

The outer ends of the arms L are each provided with a horizontally-operating Wristjoint N, which is maintained in rigid position by means of a thumb-screw O. A short arm P'eXtends from each of the wrist-joints N, which arms P are adapted to swing laterally on such wrist-joint N, such arms P being each provided with a vertically-operating joint composed of a circular disk Q, which is rigidly attached to the outer end of the arm P. Similar disks R are pivotally attached on either side of the disk Q by means of athumbscrew S.

Each of the disks R is provided with an extension T, to which extension is attached a board or other suitable material U, which, by means of the joint Q R S, may be placed in any desired vertical position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. 'A represents a shelf or circular top plate, which is mounted on the top of the standard 0, which plate A may be round, but preferably semicircular, as I have shown. Suitable hooks, clasps, or other attachments may be attached to the boards U; but these I have not shown and do not claim.

My improved display-stand may be arranged to assume numerous forms and figures, but I have shown only a few of the forms into which the same may be adjusted.

In displaying goods in large windows my stands are used collectively, and in displaying dress-goods they furnish a form whereby the operator may produce any desired eifect.

The mode of operating my improved display-stand is as follows: The stand is placed in the desired position with relation to the window. The telescopic arms L J are suitably adjusted horizontally by means of the thumb-screw K. The arms L J are then adjusted in the desired lateral position by means of the spools G and thumb-screws II.

The arms P are then adjusted laterally by means of the thumb-screws 0, so as to form the boards U in a straight line or a semicircle, as is desired. The boards U are then placed in the desired position by means of the thumb-screws S, and the goods to be displayed are draped, festooned, or otherwise displayed to the fancy of the decorator on the boards U. To rearrange a window, the numerous thumb-screwsare loosened and the arms and boards suitably arranged, when the thumb-screws are again tightened and the goods again arranged.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a display-stand of the class described, the combination with a suitable base of a telescopic Vertical standard, rigidly attached to the base, a suitable number of laterallyextending arms adjustably attached to the Vertical standard, suitable hollow spools piv otally attached on the top side of the lateral arms, telescopic horizontal arms inserted in the hollow spools, suitable laterally-operating arms pivotally attached tothe outer ends of the telescopic horizontal arms, and the display-boards Upivotally attached to such laterally-operating arms, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.

2. In a display-stand, the combination with the base-block A of the telescopic Vertical standard B O, the thumb-screw D adapted to impinge upon the standard 0, the lateral arms E adjnstably attached to the Vertical standard B C, the thumb-screws F inserted in the arms E and adapted to impinge upon the standard 13 C, the spools G provided with the opening I, pivotally attached on the top of the arms E, the thumb-screws II attached to the spools G, the telescopic arms L J, inserted in the openings 1, the thumb-screws K adapted to impinge upon the arms J, the thumb-screws M adapted to impinge upon the arms L, the armsP pivotally attachedto the outer ends of the arms L by means of the thumb-screws O, the disks Q rigidly attached tothe outer ends of the arms P, the disks R adapted to engage with the disks Q, the thumb-screws S adapted to engage with the disks Qand R, the extensions T attached to the disks R, the display-boards U rigidly attached to the extensions T and the cap A attached to the top of the rod 0, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
