Be it known that I, JAMES J. ANDEEsoN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Display-Stands,of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in stands for the display of rolls or bolts of cloth or other fabric. Y

In displaying rolls` of cloth it is the custom in dry-goods establishments to pile the rolls horizontally upon each other and expose one side of each roll fortheinspection of purchasers. It is usual, while thus piling the rolls, where they consist of cloths varying in texture, shade, or color, to arrange them in a manner to produce desired contrasting or blending effects,

to demonstrate the effects of combinations,y

of shades or of different fabrics. While these are some of the objects desired, it is also important to enable the different textures and shades to be inspected individually. To do this successfully requires that the rolls be turned to various angles with reference to the light, and to accomplish this it has been necessary heretofore to remove the roll to be inspected from its place inthe pile, which is inconvenient and also objectionable, inasmuch as it disarranges the pile and subjects the fabric to more or less handling and consequent danger of being soiled.

The object of my improvement is to overcome this objection by providing a displaystand which shall enable the rolls piled upon it to be adj usted to any desired angle with reference to the light without removal from the stand.

I In operating my improved device the rolls of fabric to be displayed are arranged to lie jhorizontally-the lowest upon the base A for-- ward of the back B, and the others one above the other, all resting against the back B. rIhe rolls may then be adjusted to a desired angle with reference to the light byloosening the sety screw k, shifting the back B to the proper angle, and tightening the setscrew again to clamp the rod D.y To permit this adj ustrnent it will be observed that the rod D must be pivotal; and while I prefer that the arm C shall be rigidly fastened to the back, it may be pivi otal.
