CRATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,706, dated April '7, 1896. Application filed November 18, 1895 Serial No. 569,330. (No model.)

To all whmn it may coiicern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD ANDREW RI- YIERE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tyler, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to supply a crate for packing and transporting bottles of such material and such form of construction as will present a minimum liability to breakage of the contents, and I accomplish my object by the mechanical means hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 is an end View in section, bottom side up, through the line m of Fig. 2.

I construct my crate of the horizontal wire strands a, b, c, and cl, the corner strands E, F, G, and H, and the strands f g h ?.'j Z m "n, which are vertical at the sides and ends and extend across the bottom, as shown in Fig. 2, and continue up the opposing side and end.

(Not shown in the drawings.) The wires designated as vertical become horizontal on the bottom and cross each other at right angles, forming the bottom of the crate, and,with the horizontal wires 6 and 0 extending around the crate, form, with the corner strands, the sides and ends of the crate. The top of my crate is constructed of the wires 19 q r 3 t 16 o w a; y, the rim of the top being wire 19, wires q r s t crossing the other designated top wires at right angles, the fastening at the sides and ends of the top wires being upon the rim-wire 1). Wire hinges 5 and 6 secure the top onone side and the catches 7 and 8 secure it on the opposing side.

To separate the crate into compartments, so as to give to each bottle a separate stall, I provide the horizontal wire 5, extending around the crate, as heretofore described, to

which I attach the wires 17, 18, and 19, which cross wires 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24 attached at the ends to wire I) at right angles. To supply a neck-hold for the bottles, I construct a second partition, located with reference to the size of the bottle to be packed in the crate, which consists of wire 0 extending horizontally around the crate,as heretofore described,

to which are attached wires 8, 9, 10, 11, and

12, which serve to support a wire mat 14 having openings 13 woven therein for the reception of the bottle-necks, as shown in Fig. 2.

To strengthen the bottom of the crate, I supply near each end thereof the braces 15 extending from the bottom wire a to the wire 9 at one end of the crate and from the bottom wire a to the Wire 11 at the opposing end thereof. It is deemed essential to show but one brace in the drawings, which is disclosed in Fig. 3.

The rim-handles J are supplied at each end of the crate.

Having described my invention, I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture a crate composed entirely of wire and provided with a hinged top and subdivided by wires into stalls for the reception of a bottle in each stall, a wire mat placed between the bottom and top of the crate and provided with recesses for the reception of the bottle-necks substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. In a crate in combination with the outer frame entirely of wire, wire braces extending from the bottom of the frame to wires within the frame, a series of wire stalls, a Wire mat located between the bottom and top of the crate and provided with meshes for the reception of the necks of bottles, as and for the purposes described.
