WIRE FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Lef-,ters Patent No. 557,684, dated April v, 189e.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, GEORGE LEHBERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newburg, county of Orange, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in XVire Fences, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to wire fences, and the object thereof is to provide a novel wire fence composed of continuous wires arranged in vertical loops bound together by continuous horizontal wires twisted in one direction, whereby I provide a fence strong and durable and also ornamental in appearance, and which may be made by hand or machinery.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciiication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, and which shows in elevation a section of fence made according to my improved method.

My improved fence may be made in sections of any desired length, and the form shown in the drawing is composed of two wires, whichA are arranged in vertical loops or pickets consisting of two wires each, bent so that the sides approach each other near the top and near the bottom, where they are securely united by two wires twisted together, as will be readily understood, thus binding the fence into a strong integral structure. 'These wires are preferably united by a single twist extending in one direction from end to end but the twist may be double or right and left, if desired, extending in both directions from a point midway between the pickets. The pickets are twisted together at intervals,as shown at 7 ,and between which points they are separated to form open spaces or loops 9, 10 and 11.

In the construction shown the fence is composed of two wires, and it will be observed that it consists of a series of loops or pickets formed by folding the wires in the following manner: Beginning at the left the wire 2 is carried down and up to form the first picket and then carried over to form the third and fifth in the same manner, while the second wire 17 forms the second and fourth, and so sain No. 546,146. The central loops l0 are provided with outward curves or projections 1f), formed by bending the side wires of the pickets, by which means the adjacent side wires of the separate pickets are caused to approach each other, and in my improvement these adjacent parts are united by star-shaped attachments 20, each of which is connected with two of the pickets by means of metal bands 2l, formed on or connected with the backs thereof, and which are secured to the projections 19 of the pickets. By this means the separate pickets are bound firmly together, centrally thereof, and the fence made more substantial, while adding to the ornamental appearance thereof. A loop lis also formed at the bottom of each picket, and the upper ends of the pickets are united by curves of any desired configuration 3 and it will be seen that a fence made as herein shown and described is braced firmly and securely and is not liable to sag, and is at the same time ornamental, durable, and comparatively inexpensive.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A fence composed of two separate continous wires each of which is folded into ver tical pickets or loops, the folds thereof being also continuous, the alternate pickets being formed by the same wire, and the arrangement being such that the wires cross each other only at the top, the loops or pickets being bound together at the top and bottom, substantially as shown and described.
