Description
I( ff UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WORCESTER., OE EEWPOHT, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOBE-SOCKS.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 55,756, dated June 19, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WORCESTER, of Newport, Campbell county, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and usef'ul Improvements in Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference bein g' had to the accompanying'drawings, making part ot' this specification.
My invention consists otl a valve and attachments applicable for a steam-valve, watervalve, or mudve-lve, the valve being so connected that it can be rotated on its seat from the outside for grinding, cleaning, or other purposes independent ot' the opening or closing' mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an axial section of a globe-valve embodying Inyinvention. Fig. 2 is a Similar View Ot' a mud-valve.
A is the shell .of an ordinary globe-valve, provided with the usual seat B. C is the valve rigidly connected to the Stem and hand-wheel D E, the stem-working through an ordinary stuffing-box, F.
The common screw-threaded stem G is provided with a circular button, H, which is fitted into a recess in the valve and kept'in place (capable only of rotation) by means of the inside screw thimble, I. The valve stem G is provided with stuffing-box J and hand-wheel K, the wheel serving,` to operate the valve in Opening and closing.
Ordinarily the simple rotation of the valve on its seat will Clear away any foreign matter that may have rested on the bearing-surfaces and prevented a tight joint. This can be eft'ectually accomplished by the simple rotation of the hand-wheel E.
For the purposes ot grinding pressure can be applied by hand-wheel K and Screw-stem G, the necessary rotation being accomplished through hand-wheel E and stem D.
Fig. 2 exhibits the application ot my improvements to the mud valve, the same letters of reference applying to both figures.
I claim herein as new and of myinvention- The valve G, adapted to rotate, in the manner substantially as described, on the stem G,aud provided with a rigid stem, D, operated from the outside, in the manner and for the purpose specitied.
In testimony ot' which invention l hereunto set-my hand.
JOSEPH WORCESTER. Witnesses EDWARD H. KNIGHT, J AMES H. LAYMAN.
