COIN CONTROLLED VENDING MACHINE.

\VILLIAM APPLETON FERREE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL P. FERREE, OF SAME PLACE.
COIN-CONTROLLED VENDING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,306, dated March 31, 1896.
Application filed July 12, 1895. $erial No. 555,697. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM .APPLETON FERREE, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Controlled Vending- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of vending-machines wherein a series of coin-controlled receptacles is arranged so that each receptacle shall be adapted to hold a single article of merchandise, which maybe removed from the receptacle by depositing the appropriate piece.
The particulars of my improvements are hereinafter pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a series of three receptacles, the lid of the first being raised and the lock-case of the third being removed. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view 0 coin-controlled locking mechanism.
Corresponding parts are designated by similar reference-letters in both figures.
The series of receptacles is arranged in and upon a frame A, which is formed of metal or other material of sufficient strength for the purpose. This frame has the characteristics of a longitudinal section of a tube and is divided into a number of compartments by means of the partitions F F F, these compartments being of a size adapted to hold a single article of the merchandise which it is proposed to vend. The frame is attached to suitable supports by means of screws 2' z, passing through it and into the support.
For each compartment I provide a lid 0, which is arranged to close the compartment and to be held closed by means of the coincontrolled locking mechanism of the lock B. D D are announcement-openings in the lids, and E E are the coin-slots in the looks. A
coin passing down the coin-guideway 6 trips the lever f and frees the hook g, allowing the lid 0 to be raised and the contents of the case to be removed. By this arrangement I secure a plurality of merchandise-receptacles, all formed and supported in a common frame, the partitions F forming the divisions and also serving to support the lock-cases B B', which are placed adjacent to them, each compartment being provided with its own lid and all forming a uniform and symmetrical whole adapted for use in cars and vehicles where space is restricted and the use of vendingmachines operating upon the reservoir principle is impracticable because of the lack of room for the machines.
This class of machines is particularly adapted for use in vending newspapers and similar articles, and by constructing the same in the manner described I am enabled to manufacture them cheaply and quickly and to secure a series of receptacles which, being arranged in a common frame, can be readily applied along the upright supports of a streetcar, above the windows, the partitions giving rigidity to the frame, so that it will perform its proper functions Without having a continuous support behind it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination with a semitubular frame having a series of partitions dividing said frame into a plurality of uniform compartments, a plurality of semitubular lids one for each compartment and hinged to the said frame, a tubular lock-case adjacent to each partition, means within each lock, for looking a lid, and a pawl within each case adapted to be moved by a coin' or coins to permit of the movement of a lid whereby access to any one compartment is permitted independent of the others.
WM. APPLETON FERREE.
