UNITED STATES lPATENT OFFICE. Y
ROBERT KNIGHT STORY, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
BATH-'TU B.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 557,289, dated March 31, 1896.
Application filed May 6, 1895. Serial No. 548,202. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ROBERT KNIGHT STORY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in bath-tub construction, and has special reference to the manner of securing the several parts together and the means employed to prevent the corrosion of the outer and inner metallic shells, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved tub. Fig. 2 is a crosssection on line of flanges of outer shell, through which the body-sections are secured by rivets or otherwise. Fig. 3 is a portion of the top flanges of outer and inner shells, showing manner of bolting them together. Fig. 4. is a side elevation of tub, showing a strip of met-al inserted between the outer and inner shells on top of the body sheet to equalize the surface of flanges.
In the drawings like letters indicate like parts.
The bathtub is composed of an outer shell of metal A, preferably iron or steel, and an inner lining of sheet copper, aluminium ,brass, or zinc, or any other metal suitable for the purpose. The outer casing or shell is coated on its inner surface with a non-corrosive liquid or rust-proof solution. The outer shell or main body of the bath-tub is constructed in three sections, flanged all around at the outside edges, the joints A being either punched and riveted or lock-seamed together to form 4the body of the t-ub.
The inner shell or lining Bis formed of three or more pieces securely pressed or secured to the outer shell, the seams being either soldered joints or lock-seamed. The
upper portion or outer edge of said inner lining is iianged so as to conform to the upper ilanges on the outer shell.
The top flanges of both the outer and inner :shell are punched with suitable holes and bolted together, so as to rmly secure them to each other, thus making the outer shell and lining substantially one solid body, as shown in Fig. 3.
Before bolting the top flanges of the inner and outer shells together, owing to there being an unevenness in the top flanges of the outer shell of the tub caused by the flanges of the head and foot sheets overlapping the flanges of the main or body sheet of the outer shell, I insert and add to the iianges on the intermediary body sheet between the flanges of the outer shell and inner lining a strip of metal of the proper thickness and Width to even up or make' the entire surface of the top of the anges of the tub perfectly level and true, as shown in Fig. 4., so that when the wooden rim is screwed thereon a Water-tight joint is secured without filling the space which would be otherwise left with compounds which are not stable or durable.
The tub when thus completed is supported on metallic legs so attached to the body of the tub as to conceal the joints and to support the tub a suitable distance above the ioor, so as to prevent the accumulation ofdirt, rbc., under the same.
That I claim as new and of my own invention, for which I ask Letters Patent of the United States, isk
l. A bath-tub consisting of an outer metallic shell or casing made in sections, flanged and secured at all points by rivets or lockseaming, the top flanges of both the head and foot sheets overlapping the iianges of the intermediary or body sheet, securing the same together by means of a rivet or screw passed through the thickness of metal where they overlap; and additional strips of metal, laid on and secured to the top anges of the intermediary sheet, whereby said flanges are reinforced and trued up to the face-line of the top flanges of the head and foot sheets, substantially as set forth and described.
2. A bath-tub consisting of an outer, shell made in three sectionsflanged and secured together by rivets or lock-seaming, the top iiangespof the head and foot sections over-` lapping the flanges of the intermediary section-and secured thereto, a non-corrosive rust-proof coating on the inner side of the ence of two witnesses, this 1st day of May,
outer shell, and an inner shell acting as a 1895. lininfto theouter casin r and attached thereto vby bts or otherwise,c substantially as set ROBERT KNIGHT SFORY 5 forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres- Titnesses H. C. VAN VECHTEN, JAMES KNAUT.
