UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS MCDERMOTT AND FRANCIS P. MCNULTY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
COLLAR, NECKTIE, AND STUD FASTENER.
SPEQ'JIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 557,141, dated March 31, 1896. Application tiled December 7, 1895. Serial No. 571,388. (No model.)
To-LZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, THOMAS MCDERMOTT and FRANCIS P. MONULTY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collar, Necktie, and Stud Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specication,in explaining its construction.
Figure l is a front view of plate; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section of Fig. l, showing stud in position; Fig. 3, a side elevation of stud; Fig. 4, an end view of stud; Fig. 5, a rear View of tie with plate in position; Fig. 6, a plan view of stud-head, and Fig. 7 a central section of Fig. 6. Y
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The obj ect of our improvement is to produce a collar, necktie, and stud fastener easily attached or removed, and that when attached will hold the collar in place around the neck, and the shank securely against the collar, without permitting perpendicular, lateral, or revolving motion of the shank within the collar-buttonhole or around the neck of the shank, and so attached that the necktie is securely and correctly held in position.
For the base of an ordinary stud we substitute the spring A, its ends normally inclined toward the head B of the shank C, said shank being slightly thinner at its edges than along its middle, shaped to conform to the interior surface of an ordinary collar-buttonhole, the width of the neck D being preferably the same thickness as the width of the shank. The plate E, attached to the rear side of the necktie, preferably with thread, has riveted to its upper end the plate F, provided with a slot extending upward from the middle of its lower edge for the admission of the neck D. The plate E is provided with an H-shaped slot G H, the part G of it represented by dotted lines and the part H of it represented by full lines in Fig. l. That portion of the slot designated by the dotted lines forms a cavity adapted to secure the head B of the shank C. The plate E and the wide springI are riveted together near their lower edges. Said spring is shown by dotted lines in Fig. .1. The upper end of said spring is free and normally pressing against the outer side of the plate E.
The stud-head K, formed to be attached to the head B of the shank, when preferred as an ornament to the necktie, has preferably a circular base or end with outward-extending rim, the outer end plate L preferably ornamental. The inner end plate Mis provided with a horizontal slot N for the admission of the head B from without and with cavities O for the admission of the head B from within. One end of the spring P within the stud-head is attached at Q, the other end being free to move. The slot and cavities referred to are shaped to closely iit the parts of the head Bin which they come in contact. Y
To attach the stud-head to the shank-head B, it is pushed through the slot N and against the spring P and turned a quarter of a revolution, when the spring P forces the head B back into the recesses or cavities O.
To fasten the shirt-collar to the shirt-band and attach the necktie, the head, neck, and shank from the side next the throat are pushed through the neckband-buttonhole and through the buttonholes of the collar and inserted into the lower horizontal portion of the slot H, pressing back the spring I, then pulling perpendicularly downward the tie, the neck D passing upward within the slot until the head B becomes opposite to the slot G, when the spring I forces the head B horizontally back into the slot G, where it is firmly held. The spring A, taking up the surplus length of shank, its ends pressing against the interior surface of the shirt-band, assists the spring I in holding the head B firmly in the slot G, and the friction of the spring A in contact with the neckband, the close-fitting shank in the buttonholes of the necktie-band and the collar provide against the motions hereinbefore referred to.
What we claim as of our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
The elongated spring, A, slightly curving outward, rigidly attached near its middle, to the end of the shank, C, the shank shaped to conform to the interior surface of collar-buttonholes, and extending outward, having toward its other end, shoulders, neck and head; in combination with the plate, F, provided IOO with a slot extending upward fromthe middle of its lower edge, for the admissionof the neck, D, and the plate E, provided with an H-shaped slot, the upper portion of which forms a cavity adapted to receive the head, B, and closely itting against the ends and three sides of the head, B, and in combination with the spring, l, riveted to the lower edge oi' the plate, E, the upper inward surface of 1o said spring, normally pressing against the outer side of the plate, E, and adapted to force the head, B, into the upper horizontal portion of the H-shaped slot, designated as, G, as described and for the uses and purposes set forth.
