SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 557,012, dated March 24, 1896.

Be it known that I, CHRIS MYHRE, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Padlocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved permutation-padlock; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I is a side elevation of my improved padlock. Fig. II is a vertical sectional view on the indicated line II Il of Fig. I. Fig. III is a top plan view of one of the fixed disks. Fig. IV is a top plan View of one of the rotating disks. Fig. V is a top plan view of my improved padlock,the shackle or link thereof being removed. Fig. VI is a side elevation of the shackle or link. Fig. VII is a view in perspective of tIie body of the lock.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the body or centerpost of the device, the same being in the form of a vertically-arranged rod having a fixed base-plate 2. Extending the entire length of the center-post lis a rectangular groove 3, that communicates with a recess 4 formed in the base-plate. At right angles to the groove 3 and extending the entire length of the post 1 is a triangular groove 5.
6 indicates a rectangular lug that is formed integral with the upper end of the post 1 and extends in alignment with and from the rear end of the vertical groove 3 to the opposite side of the post 1. In the face of said integral rectangular lug 6 toward the groove 3 is formed a screw-threaded aperture 7.
Rotating disks 8, of the same diameter as is the base 2, are constructed with star-shaped apertures 9 in their centers. Leading from the outer points of these star-shaped apertures to the edges of said disks are indicatinglines 10, and upon the peripheries of each of said disks adjacent said indicating-lines is a series of letters or numerals 11. In each of the star-shaped apertures is .removably located a star-shaped disk 12, in the center of which is a circular aperture 13, from which -extends into the body of the disk a rectangular notch 1-1.
Fixed disks 15 are of the same diameter as are the disks 8 and base 2, and said disks are 55 disks 15 and extending into the apertures 16 65 therein at points approximately at right angles to the notches 17 are triangular lugs 1S of such a size as to tit in the triangular groove 5 in the center-post 1. It is essential one on top of the other and arranged upon the center-post 1. Vhen the disks 15 are located upon said center-post the lugs 18 are slipped downwardly through the triangular groove 5 in said center-post.
19 indicates a cap or top plate for the padlock, the same being constructed with a transversely-extending rectangular slot 20 that communicates and is in alignment with a rectangular groove 21 formed in the top sur- 8o face of said plate. On the opposite side of the top face of this plate 19 and in alignment with said slot 20 and groove 21 is a rectangular groove 22, and passing through the wall 23 that separates this groove 22 from the cen- 85 trally-arranged rectangular slot 20 is an aperture 24. Formed in the under side of this top plate 19 is a circular recess 25 which allows said plate to be located upon the top of the center-post 1, and after the disks have 9o been alternately and properly located upon said center-post and the top plate upon the last one of said disks and on the top of said center-post a screw 25 is passed through the horizontally-aligned apertures 23 and 7. This 9 5 kvery effectually holds the disks upon the center-post and prevents them from becoming accidentally removed.
26 indicates the shackle, the upper end of which is formed into a hook 27, and the body roo of said shackle extends downwardly from the center of said hook and said bodyis attached Extending into the bodies of the 6o that the disks S and 15 be alternately held 7o to one arm of said hook. Formed in the outer edge of the body of the shackle 26 is a series of rectangular notches 2S of such a width as that they will readily receive the thickness of the star-shaped disks 12. The projecting lugs 29 between these notches 28 are of such t-hiekness as that they will just iill the rectangular notches 17 in the disks 15. The lower one of these lugs 29 rests in the rectangular recess 4 formed in the base-plate 2. The end of the hook 27 to which the body of the shackle is iixed rests in the groove 21, while the top of the body of said shackle passes through the rectangular slot 20. The end of the hook .i7 that is not fixed to the body of the shackle 26 is adapted tobelocated in the rectangular groove or recess 22, and when so located it will be noted that the head of the screw 25 is entirely. covered. lVhen the shackle is at its lowermost position and any or all of the disks 1.5 carrying the starshaped disks 12 are rotated in either direction, said shackle will be Very efficiently locked, as the rectangular notches 14 in the star-shaped disks 12 are thrown out of alignment with the lugs 29 on the body 26 of said shackle.

Assuming that it is desired to set a combination the letters of which form the word cow, the lowermost disk 8 and the starshaped disk 12 carried thereby are so arranged relative one another as that the rectangular notch Min said disk 12 is in direct alignment with the indicatingdine 10 that leads to the letter W on the periphery of the disk 8. The next disk above this lowermost disk 12 and its star-shaped disk are so arranged relative one another as that the notch 1l in said second star-shaped disk is directly opposite the indicating-line that leads to the letter O on the periphery of said second disk.
rlhe top one of the disks 8 andV the starshaped disk 12 carried thereby are so arranged relative oneanother as that the rectangular notch 14 will come directly opposite the indicating-line that leads to the letter on the periphery of said upper disk. When said combination is so set and the disks are properly positioned upon the center-post and the shackle Vproperly arranged within said post and disks, the operator so rotates the disks 8 as that the letters C, O, 1V come in direct alignment with the indicating-mark upon the top of the cap 19. This necessarily brings all of the rectangular notches 14C into direct alignment with the notches 17, and when this is done the padlock is unlocked and the shackle is free to be moved in and out of the centerpost and disks. i
The object of having a number of letters or indicating-marks upon the peripheries of the revolving disks is to mislead any person trying to open the padlock when the combination is ofi, and also to enable the owner of the padlock to make a number of changes inV the combination, this being done by arranging the star-shaped disks 12 relative the disks 8.
Then a padlock of my improved construction is locked and in use, the screw 25 that holds the various parts is entirely covered, and said padlock can therefore in no wise be taken apart While the same is locked, this being the case in many padlocks where certain of the screws or rivets that hold the same together are exposed.
A padlock of my improved construction possesses superior advantages in point oi' siniplicity, durability, and general efficiency, and is proof against the tamperings of unauthorized persons `with a View to taking said padlock apart while the saine is locked and in use.
The improved permutation-padlock, comprising the base 2the center-post 1, the series of disks mounted upon the said centerpost, a rectangular lug 6 formedupon the upper end of saidpost and provided with a horizontal screw-threaded aperture 7, the cap 19 having the central slot 20 and provided with the rectangular slot 22 in alignment with said slot 2O butlocated at one edge of saidl cap, there being ahorizontal aperture 24 formed in the Wall of said cap that separates said slot 22 from the slot 20, a screw 25 located in the said horizontal slots 22 and 2l and locking` together the said cap and said center-post, the head of said screw being located Within the said slot 22, and the shackle 2G engaging said centerpost and said disks and having the hook 27 at its upper end engaging in the said slot 22 and covering the head of said screw, whereby the Withdrawal of the latter is prevented until ai'- ter the said shackle is witlidrawi'i, subst-antially as herein specified.
