SHADE-ROLLER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,839, dated March 24, 1896.

To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, PAUL II. BRANGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Rollers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanyingand forming a part of the same.

My present-invention is an improvement in devices for securing a curtain or shade to its roller whereby the attachment and detachment of the same may be very greatly facilitated; and it consists in the combination, with a grooved or slotted roller, of fastening-clips of peculiar conformation, by means of which the edge of the shade is jammed and secured in said groove.

Heretofore shade-rollers both solid and hollow have been provided with a longitudinal groove for receiving the edge of a shade, which latter has been secured in said groove by means of a bar or by means of separate fastening-pieces adapted to be forced or pushed into the groove over or between the portions of the shade contained therein; but these devices have been of such character as to render their ready insertion or withdrawal a matter of considerable difficulty, and the object of my present invention is to produoea combination of roller and fastening device which shall be more easy of application and removal and equally effective as a fastener.

The improvement which forms the subject of my application is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a shade-roller with a shade attached thereto by means of my improved clips or fasteners. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 00 a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section on line 3 g A designates a shade-roller of any desired character, and composed of wood, a hollow cylinder of sheet metal, or other materials.

13 is a slot extending longitudinally along the surface of the roller and having one edge, as O, projecting over the slot, so as. to leave a narrow opening, and thinned down to form a sharp engaging edge.

D is one of the clips or fasteners. This consists of a strip of resilient sheet metal bent in semicircular form, having a diameter apsubstantially at right angles to that portion of the said clip that engages with the edge C.

In using this device the edge of a shade F is folded back and the folded portion inserted into the slot B. At desired intervals the clips or fasteners D are then applied by inserting their hooked edges into the slot over the material of the shade, pinching or jamming the latter in the slot and then forcing the free end of the clip over or around the roller. The resilience of the metal permits this to be readily accomplished. There is little tendency of the clip to come out of the slot after having once been forced in, owing to the peculiar conformation of its hooked edge, but this tendency is still further reduced by the extended tail portion which embraces the roller. Astrain or pull on the shade along the line of the slot tends to lift the straight or inwardly-eXtending edge H bodily out of the slot, but this tends only to force the inner surface of the under part of the hook K in closer contact with the under side of the edge 0, and thereby binds the curtain the tighter.

I have found that the curved extension or tail of the clip may be dispensed with and a good fastener made, and this I have shown at D, Fig. 1. In this form the extension is simply cut off and the device used in the same way.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination with a curtain shaderoller formed with a slot having a projecting or engaging edge of metal clips or fasteners formed at the end as a hook adapted to enter the slot and having an edge extending at substantially right angles to the hook or engaging portion of said clips as set forth.

2. The combination with a shade -roller formed with a slot having a projecting or engaging edge of metal clips or fasteners of semicircular form with a hook at one end adapted to enter the slot and having an. edge to enter the slot and engage with edge (land an inwardly-extending edge H, as set forth.
