HAND-GRUBBER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,689, dated March 17, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. OLIVER, of Powhatan Court-House, in the county of Powhatan and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIand-Grubbers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention has reference to hand-grubbers, the object being to provide a device of the character named of improved and simple construct-ion, and which possesses strength and durability.

\Vith this object in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and ill ustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the grubber. Fig. .3 is an elevation of the lever dc taohed from its fulcrum. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base with the lever removed.

A is the bifurcated support carrying the fulcrum-bolt l3 and resting at its lower end upon cross-sill C secured to the U-shaped foot or base D. Said base is preferably formed of a piece of timber bent into proper shape after steaming, which forms a strong and solid support for the grubber. The support is braced to the base or foot by the inclined brace-rods E.

F is the lever, and secured to its forward end is hook G having the rearwardly extcnding parallel and slightly-separated arms II and 1, between which the forward end of the lever is secured. Arm I is formed with the series of notches or upward bends for confining the lever in proper position upon the fulcrum-bolt, and for holding the lever permanently thereto I provide the swinging springlatch J, hinged at one end to the under surface of arm I and adapted to pass beneath the fulcrum-bolt and secured the swinging link K, so as at its free end by to securely confine the lever in proper position upon the bolt.

The grapple consists of the tongs L extended across each other and pivoted together in the usual manner, each tong being provided upon its upper end with a link or clevis M, and these links or clevises are confined in the elongated link N confined in hook G by the thumb-bolt O.

In operation a downward movement of the grapple tends to open the tongs for securing a hold upon the grub, while an upward movement of. the grapple closes the tongs upon the same. A handle P upon the upper side of the lever may be used for conveniently lifting and carrying the device from place to place.

I amaware that it is old to fulcrum a lever upon a movable support and provide the same with a grapple for grubbing purposes, and I am also aware that it is old to adjust longitudinally the lever mechanism upon its fulcrum, and to these arrangements I make no broad claim; but

hat I do claim, Letters Patent, is-

1. An improved grubber comprising a fulcrum, the hook, the separated arms integral with the hook and extending rearward therefrom, the notches in the under arm for engaging the fulcrum at the desired point, the latch for passing beneath the fulcrum for securing the device in proper position thereon, the grapple carried by the hook, and the lever secured at its forward end between the said arms, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a grubber, the combination of the support, the fulcrum-bolt thereon, the lever having the indentations on its under side, the grapple carried by the lever, the latch pivoted at one end to the under side of the lever and extending beneath said lever-indentations, and a device for securing the free end of the latch to the lever, thus holding the lever on the fulcrum-bolt at the desired indentation, substantially as shown and described.
