DISCHARGE-CHUTE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,527, dated March 17, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:'''

Be it known that I, PETER BERRES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Discharge-Chutes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in discharge-chutes, and is particularly designed and adapted to be employed to receive the waste metal from shears.

The invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby metal waste may be easily and conveniently handled and made up in bundles of any desired weight.

The invention has for its further object to design a chute of the above-referred-to class that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable and highly eflicient in its operation; furthermore, to provide a depository for the waste metal containing wires employed for making up the bundles or packages.

WVith the above and other objects in view the invention fin ally consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout both views, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a chute constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

In the drawings, A indicates a chute of the ordinary and wel1-known construction, having side walls, a a, and an enlarged top portion B. The said side walls, a a, slightly taper to the bottom, and at this point a depository O is formed to receive the waste, provided with a semicircular or curved rear wall to provide for the curving or bending of the binding-wires, presently referred to by letter, to aid in conveniently passing the wires around the waste metal as it falls into said able weight J, having a set-screw K. The

lower receptacle is provided with a side wall, L, for the purpose of effectually retaining the waste metal. Th O ration of the device will be apparent. The chute is adjusted in position under the shears and the waste metal will fall in the V-shaped pocket until the weight of the rectal therein will counterbalance that of the weight on the lever. At this point the checkflap will open, the operator will tilt the lever, and the entire load will be discharged into the receptacle below. The wires underneath the metal waste will be drawn around the same and tightened with pinchers or other suitable tool and the bundle removed at the opening at the side.

It will be noted that by adjusting the weight the check-flap maybe regulated to discharge the load when the latter reaches a predetermined weight, and thus form bundles of uniform weight, as desired.

Particular attention is called to the fact that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The discharge-chute having the check-flap in its upper part and the waste-metal-receiv ing depository fixed at its lower end having the curved or semicircular rear wall provided with the binding-wire-receiving slots con forming to its curvature, substantially as set forth.
