Description

(No Model.) A. N. RUSSELL.
' SASH l HOLDER. v No. 556,477. I Patented Mar. 17, 1896i WITNESSES:
wffiwmam V I q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT N. RUSSELL, OF MOUND VALLEY, KANSAS.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 556,477, dated March 17, 1896.
Application filed August 31, 1895. $erial No. 561,171. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT N. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mound Valley, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports or Looks for Window-Sashes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to supports or looks for window-sashes, and the object thereof is to provide a device Which will securely lock and hold the'sash in any desired position and which will prevent its being raised or lowered and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the window-sash and a part of the frame thereof provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a plan view of the lock or support; Fig. 3, a side View thereof 5' and Fig. 4 represents a detail of the construction.
In the above-described drawings, A represents the vertical side portions of the windowframe, and B a window-sash or the side portion thereof, and in the practice of my invention I secure on one side of the sash a segmental bar O, which is provided with a central rectangular recess D, and on each side thereof with ratchet-teeth or projections E, which project in both directions from the central rectangular recess D. I also pivotally connect with the sash a lever F, provided with a segmental head G, the pivotal connection bein gnear the edge of the sash and near the outer central portion of the segmental head. The lever Fis provided near its middle portion and on its inner side with a longitudinal flange or shoulder K, which is adapted to enter the rectangular recess D in the segmental plate 0, and, as will be observed, the lever F and its segmental head G may be revolved at its pivotal connection with the sash, which is made at g.
In operation or in the normal position of the parts the longitudinal flange or shoulder K on the lever F rests within the rectangular recess D, and whenever it is necessary to lock the window in any desired position the lever K is moved either to one side or the other, as will be readily understood, and is held in the required position by means of the longitudinal flange or shoulder K, operating in connection with the ratchet-teeth E.
If it is desired to prevent the Window-sash from being raised, the lever F is moved upward, and if is desired to prevent the sash from being lowered the lever F is moved downward, and, as will be understood, in each of these operations one of the ends of the segmental head G is forced against the frame A, so as to prevent the movement of the sash. It is evident, however, that my improved lock will hold the window in any desired position by moving the lever in either direction, and in this case the ratchet-teeth E will preferably be formed rectangular or be provided with straight side walls, as will be readily understood, and it is evident that other changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with a window-sash, of a locking device comprising a lever, which is provided with a segmental head pivotally connected with a sash on the edge thereof and a rack-bar secured to said sash, over which said lever projects, said lever being also provided with a device, adapted to engage said rack-bar, so as to lock the segmental head, in the desired position, said rack-bar being provided with a segmental recess on its middle portion, and with ratchet-teeth at each side thereof, which project in opposite directions therefrom, and the lever-catch operating in connection with said rectangular recess, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of August, 1895.
ALBERT N. RUSSELL.
