CORN-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,330, dated March 17, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. BOYCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Holders, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawin gs, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to table implements, and particularly to that class thereof known as corn-holders, and the object of the invention is to provide an effective device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which an ear of hot corn may be held and manipulated without applying the hands thereto.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompa nying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved corn-holder; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3.

In the practice of my invention I provide two similar heads or end pieces A and B, respectively, each of which is preferably composed of sheet metal, and secured to the base or lower side of the head A is an extension or arm 0, which is composed of wire and formed into a loop, the sides of which are straight, as shown at C, and the end thereof being curved outwardly, as shown at O and connected with the base-plate A in any desired manner. The head or end B is also provided wit-h a similar arm or extension D, which is also composed of wire and made in the form of a yoke, the ends of the wire being curved outwardly, as shown at d, and connected with the head B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Connected with the outer end of the yoke or extension 0 are bands or rings C through which the sides of the arm or extension D are passed, and connected with the outer end of said arm or extension D are rings or bands cl, through which the sides of the arm or extension 0 are passed, and by means of this arrangement said heads or end pieces are longitudinally adjustable and may be drawn together or separated, as desired, and mounted on and inclosing one side of the arms or extensions 0 and D is a yoke E, which is free to slide thereon, and in which is pivoted a lever F, the head of which is provided with a shoulder or projection f, and byoperating the lever F the sliding arms or extensions may be locked in any desired position. I also connect with the curved portions 0 of the arm or extension C a wire or rod G, which is curved upwardly and backwardly and connected with the head or end A, so as to give strength and stability to the device, and a similar rod or wire G is connected with the curved ends d of the arm or extension D, one end of which is connected with a segmentallycurved wire H, the ends of which are carried upward and bent backward or outward, as shown at h, and connected with the head or end B, said segmentally-curved wire being adapted to serve as a support or rest for one end of an ear of corn, as hereinafter described, and secured to the outer side of the head or end piece D is a handle K.

Pivotally connected with the head or end A is a handle Ct, which is connected with said head or end piece by means of a pin or rivet passed therethrough, and secured to the inner end thereof is a disk or plate L, with which is connected inwardly-directed prongs M, which are adapted to be inserted into the end of an ear of corn.

' The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

The prongs M are inserted into one end of an ear of corn, and the sliding arms or extensions O andD are adjusted to correspond with the length thereof in such manner that the other end of the ear of corn will be supported in the seat or rest, formed by the segmentallycurved wire H, and the partsmay be held in this position by pressing the lever F into the position shown in Fig. 1. hen the ear of corn is thus connected with the holder, the same may be revolved or turned, as will be readily understood, by simply turning the handle a, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and one which is comparatively loo 7 inexpensive, this last element depending largely upon the material of which the holder is composed.

The heads or ends A and B are preferably of the form shown in Fig. 3; but my invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention. 7

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A corn-holder, composed of heads or end pieces, as A and 13, each of which is provided with an arm or extension composed of wire bent into the form of a yoke the ends of which are connected with the heads or end pieces, and the sides thereof, being adapted to slide one upon the other, and provided with means for locking them in any desired position, said arms or extensions being also provided with braces or stays which are connected with the heads or end pieces, and one of said heads or end pieces being provided with a revoluble handle, and the other with a stationary handle, said revoluble handle being provided with inwardly-directed prongs, and the other head or end piece, being provided with a curved or segmental rest or support, substantially as shown and described.
