SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,095, dated March 10, 1896.

Application filed July 30, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER R. GooDNoW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Jars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to jars and similar receptacles, and more particularly to the covers thereof. It is often desirable that the connection or fit between a jar and its cover may be made air-tight and many devices have been used for this purpose; but they are commonly of such a nature as to render it practically impossible to give an ornamental and tasteful appearance thereto.

It is the object of my invention to provide a jar and cover which will fit together so as to be air-tight and'which at the same time may be given a highly-ornamental appearance, the closing device proper being practically concealed from view. I have shown in the accompanying drawings an embodiment of my invention in its preferred form, said drawings representing, in-

The letter A represents a jar, over the top of which the cover B is placed in use. This cover consists of a top plate 2, to the under side of which a closing device proper, 3, is secured. This closing device may consist, as shown, of a flat disk of any suitable compressible material, preferably cork, out to fit the mouth of the jar A, so as to give an airtight closure. In carrying out my invention I cover this disk of compressible material so that it will be practically concealed from view, both when in place in the top of the jar and also preferably when the cover is removed therefrom. To this end I provide a thin plate 4 of the same size and shape as the bottom of the disk 3, and held in place against said disk preferably by a nut 5 threaded onto a rod 6, which is secured to the under side of the plate 2 and passes through suitable holes in the disk 3 and plate 4. I prefer to provide means, such as pins 7, secured to the plate 2 and embedded in the disk 3 for preventing the rotation of the cover independently of the i said disk, which otherwise would be liable to Serial N01 557,598. occur in twisting the cover on or olf the jar and which might result in unscrewing the nut 5. I further conceal the disk 3 by means of a flange 8, projecting downward from the outer edge of the top plate 2, so that it will embrace the outside of the top of the jar to a point slightly below the bottom of the said disk. The lower edge of this flange may, if desired, be received on a ledge 9, formed in the top of the jar. The cover is provided with a knob 10, which serves as a handle therefor. By the means just described the disk 30f compressible material is practically concealed from View, and by making, as I prefer to do in practice, the exposed parts of the cover-that is, the plates 2 and 4, the nut 5, the flange 9, and the knob 10of silver or other ornamental metal a very highly finished and ornamental appearance may be given to my jar and cover, especially if the jar itself be ornamented, as by making it of cut glass.

A jar provided with a cover such as I have described is especially suitable for a tobaccojar, or for any other purpose Where an ornamental appearance and a tight closure are desirable.

Although, as previously stated, I prefer to employ both the flange 8 and the plate 4, yet, if desired, the said plate 4 may be omitted, since in such case the disk 3 will be concealed as long as the jar is kept closed, and the exterior of the device may be made as ornamental as in my preferred form.

I claim as my invention- A cover for jars, comprising in combination a top plate provided with a knob or handle and with an ornamental flange, within which the upper edge of the jar is adapted to be loosely received, a disk of compressible material of a thickness less than the width of the flange secured to the under side of said top plate, a plate held against the bottom of the said disk and covering the same, and means such as pins 7 or their equivalent for preventing the rotation of the top plate and the disk independently of each other, all substantially as described.
