SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,770, dated March 3, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN P. HISLEY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rope-Ties, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide simple, inexpensive, durable and safe devices for conveniently and expeditiously tying and untyin g ropes; and to that end the invention consists in the novel construction of a metallic tie, as hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
The invention is fully illustrated in the an.- nexed drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are side views, taken at right angles to each other, of a rope-tie embodying my invention and showing the same attached to a rope. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of said rope-tie, taken 011 line X X.

Myimproved rope-tie is formed in one piece of malleable iron or other suitable malleable metal. It consists essentially of the main or permanent attaching-shank a, and the ropegrip 1) extending from said shank. The detail construction of said component parts is as follows:
The shank a is formed with fingers c c, which project laterally from opposite sides of the shank, and the spur d projecting from the shank between said fingers. Said fingers are concaved 011 their inner sides to form jaws c c for gripping the rope to which the shank is to be fastened. The attachment of the said shank to the end portion of a rope r is effected in the following manner, to wit: Said end portion of the rope is laid lengthwise upon the side of the shank from which the spur cl projects. This spur is made to pierce the rope, so as to allow the rope to lie closely to the shank. Then the fingers c c are bent over onto the aforesaid portion of the rope, so as to firmly embrace the same, and in conjunction withthe spur cl permanently fasten the embraced portion of the rope to the shank. From one end of the shank a extends the axially-prolonged spiral tongue b for the attachment of another section of rope 1', which passes longitudinally through the tongue and is intertwined therewith. The internal diameter of the spiral of the tongue is sufficiently smaller than the diameter of the rope and the spaces bet-ween the helices of the aforesaid spiral are wider than the diameter of the rope to allow the latter to be bent into said spaces by the pressure of the spiral tongue against the opposite sides of the rope, and thus cause the tongue and rope to be sufficiently intertwined to torsion the embraced portion of the rope into spiral shape. The spiral tongue 1) obtains thereby such a firm grip on the rope as to effectually prevent the latter from being withdrawn from the tongue by any direct draft on the rope. At the same time said spiral tongue allows the rope to be easily detached, when desired, by drawing the rope laterally out of the end of the spiral and then winding it around the exterior of the tongue.
To reinforce the hold of the tongue on the rope the end of the shank (0 adjacent to the tongue I) is formed with a lug Z, which is disposed transversely to the axis of the spiral tongue, and is thus opposed to the direct passage of the rope from the end of the spiral tongue and exerts additional torsional strain on the tied portion of the rope.
It is obvious that my described rope-tie is applicable to rope traces of harnesses, as well as to rope halters, cattle-ties, hammock-hangers, and numerous other purposes.
Referring to the drawings, 0 0 represent fish hooks having their shanks a formed with a spiral tongue'b. d is the sinker provided 011 each end with a similar spiral tongue, and e is the float, also provided on each end with a spiral tongue. It is by means of these tongues that said hooks, sinker and float are attached to the fish-line c substantially in the same manner as the rope is attached, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The spiral tongues b on the ends of the float e are wound in the same direction in or der that said float may be readily shifted along on the line 6, while the tongues on the sinker are wound in opposite directions, thereby securing a firm hold on the line 6. Said parts can be easily detached in the same manner as the aforesaid rope is detached by merely unwinding the line 6 from the spiral tongues l) I).
hat I claim as my invention is- 1. A rope-tie formed in one piece of malleable metal and consisting of an attachingshank receiving a section of rope, an axiallyprolonged spiral tongue extending from said shank and tightly embracing another section of rope, and a lug projecting from the shank adjacent to said tongue and transversely to the axis thereof to torsion the rope at the end embraced portion into spiral shape, and a lug projecting from the shank adjacent to the spiral tongue and transversely to the axis thereof substantially as set forth and shown.
The combination of the shank a provided with the rope-gripping fingers c a formed concave on their inner sides, the spur (Z projecting from the shank between said fingers, the spiral tongue Z) extending from the shank and the lug Z projecting from the shank adj acent to the aforesaid tongue and transverse to the axes thereof, all formed in one piece of malleable metal substantially as set forth.
