POISON-BOTTLE INDICATOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,708, dated March 3, 1896.

Be it known that I, EMIL REYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poison-Bottle-Indieating Tags, of which the following is a speci: fication.

My invention relates to a poisonindicating tag to be attached to bottles or similar receptacles containing poison or dangerous drugs, medicines, chemicals, or other materials or substances which should be used or handled with care, such labels or tags having tangible protuberances thereon which direct attention to the nature of the contents of the bottle.

My invention consists in making such tag or label of a thin sheet of metal. upon which protuberances are struck up or otherwise formed integral therewith, and which may of itself be hooked or folded to place around the neck of the bottle, thus providing a convenient and inexpensive attachment as well as a mark which may be both Visually and tangibly'distinguishable from devices heretofore employed.

In the accompanying drawings,which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle with my improved tag ap plied to the neck thereof; Fig. 2, a detached face or side elevation of the tag detached; Fig. 3, a cross-section through a metal blank properly cut out but not stamped to the finished form required; Fig. 4, a similar cross-section through a finished tag with the prongs offset from the band or body of the tag.

The tag or label 1 is made of a sheet-metal plate stamped out with three end slits 2 and with a loop-strip 3, of reduced width, to enter one of the slits 2 when the tag is placed around the neck of the bottle A, as shown in Fig. l, and then turned or bent back upon the strip 3 to secure it thereon, the several slits being placed one alongside the other to allow more or less lap and adapt the tag to bottle-necks of different sizes without having the loopstrips of greater length than that necessary to fold over and make the loop.

The sheet-metal plate is out or stamped out, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, with a band 4, from the upper edge of which projects prongs 5, pointed or sharpened to scrape or prick the fingers if brought in contact with them, and

also of sufficient length to project above the cork and distributed around the cork at such distance apart that the cork may be reached and drawn out by the fingers, the prongs serving, however, as an effective barrier to prevent the cork from being withdrawn without using care and dexterity in handling both the cork and the bottle.

The metal blank is first stamped out in a flat plate, as shown in Fig. 3, and then rolled, or preferably stamped, in the form of crosssection shown in Fig, 4that is, with the pron gs bent bayonet-shaped, with double shoulders, to form an offset which will fit up snugly against the under side of the collar 6 of the bottle, and allow the band 4 to fitfiat and snugly around the neck of the bottle and the prongs be held parallel thereto.

The word Poison or any suitable designating-word maybe used instead of the word Caution shown in Fig. 2.

The tag is made of scraps of tin or other suitable sheet metal, and may be gilded, dipped, galvanized, plated, or bronzed in any well-known or preferred manner for the purpose either of further visual designation or for ornamentation.

I am aware that paper labels covered with a gritty substance have been placed upon the body of a bottle to indicate that its contents are poisonable, and also that a rubber band has heretofore been used upon the neck of a bottle, to which are secured needles which project radially therefrom, but such devices are easily attacked and damaged by strong acids, and are moreover less durable, more expensive, and less easily applied and removed from the bottle than is my device.

The tags herein shown and described may be made of a single piece of sheet metal and is durably and easilyput up in packages like the ordinary label, always readyfor use, and may be both easily applied and easily removed from the neck of the bottle.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An article of manufacture, a poison-indicating tag made of sheet metal having a band 10 to encircle and interlocking ends to secure it to the neck of the bottle, and spurs integral With the band to project upwardly therefrom around the cork, substantially as described.
