JOSEPH O. HIGGINS, OF NEWV BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FBEDERIO B. KILMER, OF SAME PLACE.
POISON-BOTTLE lNDlCATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,394, dated May 22, 1889.
Application filed May 16, 1887. Serial No. 238,436. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosEPH O. HIGGINS, of New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poison- Bottle Indicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment to be applied to bottles or receptacles containing poisonous ingredients, for
the purpose of calling attention to said bottles when they are seized.
My invention consists in a band surrounding the bottom part of the bottle, and barbed sheetmetal strips extending upward from said band, the upper ends of said strips being heldon the bottleneck by a band or cord, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, Figure l is a perspective View of a bottle provided with my improved indicator. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the indicator detached from the bot t e.
The metal band A is made integral with a series of upright barbed or serrated metal strips, B, having their upper ends bent to fit against the top and neck of the bottle,tl1e band A encircling the bottom part of the bottle O. The upper ends of the barbed or serrated strips B are held in place on and against the bottle-neck by the band or cord 1) surrounding them. With this contrivance, by carefully placing the thumb and fingers in the open spaces between the serrated or barbed strips 13 the bottle can be conveniently handled, whereas if the bottle is grasped in a non chalant or careless manner, as when in a hurry, the pain indicted by the barbs will be a forcible reminder at all times that-the contents of the bottle or receptacle are poisonous.
I am aware that it is not new to surround bottles containing poisons with bands from which spurs or barbs project, and I do not claim this broadly; but,
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A poison bottle indicator composed of the band A, the upright barbed or serrated strips B thereon, and the fasteningband D, for holding the strips against the bottle-neck, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOSEPH C. HIGGINS.
