SOLDERING CLAMP PORPLU'MBERS.
Pza-termed Mar. 3, 1896.l
11 as sf UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
MAYER SLOTKIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SOLDERING-CLANIP FOR PLUNIBERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 555,624, dated March 3, 1896. Application filed September 24,1892. Serial No. 446,776. (No model.)
To all whom t may con/cern;
Be it known that I, MAYER SLOTKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldering-Clamps for Plumbers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to and has for its object the provision of means whereby the ends of lead pipe may be soldered in a good and workmanlike manner.
The invention consists in the combination of a series of vises held to a fixed position themselves and holding the pipes in a like xed position While being operated upon. Vhile the apparatus is specially made for plumbers use, it can readily be adapted to brazing and similar purposes.
The invention also consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts or portions comprising the apparatus, as maybe hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figures l and 2 are plan Views representing an apparatus embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 repre'- sent side views of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the inner j aw of the pipe-holding vises used. Fig. 3 represents a modification of Fig. 3, a bent extension or continuation of standard E being shown for uses in vertical soldering.
Similar letters of reference designate like parts or portions in all the gures.
The letters A Al A2 in the several figures designate the several vises used for holding the pipe-sections in position for soldering or brazing. Two of the vises are necessary for connecting and soldering two pieces of pipe, three vises are necessary for three pieces, or a vise for each piece of pipe, no matter how many there are to be connected.
B designates a supporting-yoke connecting any two of the vises. Each of the vises is pivoted to revolve upon its connection or support, so that they may have a parallel, angular, or perpendicular position with reference to each .other and hold the pipe portions in like positions while being soldered.
C designates a slotted swinging arm to which is attached a third vise, A2, when three portions are to be soldered. lVhen four portions are to be soldered a pair of the yokes B may be used centered and pivoted upon a single bearing, or there may be a pair of vises held by the yoke B, and a third and a fourth vise held and supported by independent swinging arms C, the slots in the same being provided for convenience in suitin g the length of pipe portions to be held for soldering.
E designates a special standard for support- Y ing the vises. This standard may be of straight construction, as shown in Fig. 3, for use in horizontal soldering, or it may be continued and bent to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 3a above Fig. 3, for use in vertical soldering. This continuation portion, Fig. 3, is shown as a broken-olf continuation of the visesupporting standard E, carrying vise A2 in a horizontal position to be useful in vertical soldering. This same result may of course be accomplished by providing a special baseplate support in place of that shown at F in the several gures.
To provide for easy adjustment and secure grip, each of the several portions of the apparatus are pivoted to revolve upon each other. The vises pivot on the arms or standards to which they may be connected, and the arms or yokes pivot and revolve upon each other.
To secure a reliable action of the vises theyl are provided with upper and lower hollow boxes, c and d, hinged together at f, and held together at the opposite side by bolt and nut g and h. Vithin these boxes an inclosed jaw e is operated to clamp any size of pipe after the manner shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The inclosed jaw eis shown in detail in Fig. 5.
In the regular operation of the apparatus a vise A is applied to each of the pipes to be soldered, adjusted to a secure position and the soldering accomplished. The pipes are then released by openin g the box and swinging the upper portion, c, and inclosed jaw e back and removing the apparatus. For soldering a pair of horizontal pipe ends and one vertical end the bent standard E is used, the relative positions of the parts being as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. lnasoldering-clamp in combination with a centrally-pivoted supporting-yoke, a pair of IOO of the hinged box portions c and d, and the pivoted pipe-Clamps consisting of the hinged inner adjustable jaw e, as and for purposes box portions c and d, the adjustable inner j aw e, as and for purposes set forth. set forth.
2. Ina soldering-clamp in combination with MAYER SLOTKIN. 5 a centra-lly-pvoted supporting-yoke, a radi Witnesses:
ally-operating slotted extension-support and NVM. II. VEIGHTMAN,
a plurality of pivoted pipe-clamps consisting JULIUS PRAGLIN.
