Description

rif
UNITED STATES PATENT @Errea EMIL MLLER, OF NEWv YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PHOTOGRAPHIC APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,525, dated June 12,1866.
To "i tzr/0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL MLLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in- I"ed a new and useful Improvement in Photographic Apparatuses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure lis aperspective view of my improved photographic apparatus; Fig. 2, a horizontal yflew of the object-holding apparatus, Fig. 3, a side view thereof 5 Fi g. 4, a vertical view thereof after the same is turned horizontally in a right angle toward the position shown as occupied in Fig. 3.
The same letters of reference mark the same parts in all these figures. y
I deem it proper to state that, Letters Patent No. 25,276 having been granted to John Henry Pein for a new and useful method of photographing on uneven surfaces, I deem my present invention an improvement on the apparatus for photographing on uneven surfaces therein described, and especially on that part thereof which is denominated therein as panholder,77 and I refer to the specification of said patent for a more particular description of the general construction of the photographic apparatus employed by me.
The nature of my invention consists in an improvement in the photographic apparatus described in the speciiication of Letters Patent No. 25,276, whereby the pan-holder therein described is superseded by an object-holding apparatus, by the aid of which the position of the object on which the photographic picture is to be produced admits of an easier and more perfect adjustment.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
In-the annexed drawings,A B C D represent the photographic apparatus for producing pictures on vases or other irregular-shaped objects.
E represents the vase or other irregularshaped object on which the picture is to be taken.
F is a vertical. pin fastened on its lower end to the photographic apparatus. G is a hollow cylinder movin g vertically or horizontally on the said pin with a screw, H, by means of which the same may be fastened to the said pin in any desired position. On the other side of said cylinder the object-holding apparatus J K L M is attached to said cylinder.
J is the bed or base of said object-holding apparatus, which is iixed to the cylinder G, said base being provided with two horizontal square rails, N N.
K is the sliding plate containing two corresponding grooves fitting over said rails.
O O' represent two upright plates, one on each side of the sliding plate, to which upright plates the upper movable plate, L, is attached by means of two horizontal pins, a a, on which the said upper plate turns. In order tion, there is on one side of the same a slotted upright, M, attached to the lower plate, K, through the slot of which a screw, p, passes into the upper plate, L, and to which it may then be fastened in any desired position. The movable plate L contains two horizontal fiat rails, R and R', fastened to said plate by two screws, c and c', so as to admit of a rotation of said iiat rails.
cisapin passing through holes of both of said rails into the plate below. rIhese flat rails are so constructed as to form an angle of less than ninety degrees. When the pin c is taken out the two flat rails may be turned on their respective screws c and o as pivots until they form an angle on the opposite side, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, where they may be again fastened by the insertion of the pin at the angle. These two flat rails are so constructed on theirinnerlines forming the angle that they overlap, thus forming a recess wherein the base of a vase or other object may be placed and held securely.
This improved vase-holder is used in the following manner: First the height of the same is fixed by means of the screw H; then the vase is inserted between the angle formed by the at rails 5 then the holder is moved horizontally onthe pin F in the desired position; then the distance between the vase and the photographic camera is more perfectly adjusted by sliding the holder on the rails NN 5 then the inclined position required for the vase or other object is attained by turning' the upper plate, L, on the pivot c until the vase, &c.,
to fasten this upper plate in any desired posii have the required angie, when the same isi fixed in that position by means of the screw P 5 and then the picture may be taken as described in said Letters Patent No. 25,276.
It will be seen that the object-holding apparatus herein described is a substitute for the pan-holder in said former patent described, experience having` shown that the said pan- -hoidcr is not sufficient to retain the Vase or other object in the exact position required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,is-
rlhe apparatus for holding Vases or other uneven objects for the purpose of photographing thereon, substantially as hereinbefore described.
