UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.

MUSTACHE-GUARD.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,140, dated February 25, 1896.
Application iiled June 19, 1395. Serial No. 553,365. (No model.) Patented in Germany July 24, 1894, No. 82,174.
T0 @ZZ whom, t 71u63/ concern:
Be it known that we, PAUL BERNHARD WERTIANN and JOHANN HEINRICH CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH WEBER, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, and residents of Hamburg, iu the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Mustaehe- Guards, (for which we have obtained a patent in Germany, No. 82,17%, dated July 24., 1394,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to mustacheguards, and more particularly to that class of guards in which two connected comb-plates are provided, to which the mustache is clamped by means of suitable appliances.
rl`he object of our invention is to improve the construction of this class of guards in combining therewith means whereby the longer hairs at the ends of the mustache are supported and held away from the face approximately at a right angle thereto, with a view, in shaving, to prevent such parts of the Inustaehe being' lathered and shaved oli accidentally, and also in combining with said comb-plates means for effectually locking the clamping-bars thereto, as will now be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of one form of a mustache-guard embodying our invention. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on line I 1 of Fig. l, the clamping-bar being swung out into its open position; and Figs. e and are afrout and plan view, respectively, of another form of guard.
Our improved mustache-guard consists of two members of like construction articulated together by means of links e, Figs. l and 2, or e', Figs. .l and 5, so that a description of one of said members will suice for a clear understanding of the invention. These members consist of a comb-plate c, having its teeth l) at right angles thereto along one of its longer et ges, and having at its outer end a curved branch or shoulder c. This inwardly-curved branch or shoulder c is in fact a standard that forms an end guard between which and the bent end d' of the clamping-bar d? the longer hairs at the end of the mustache are held away from the face at or substantially at a right angle thereto.
-leave a space between the said short leg d of the clamping-bar and the vert-ical member of the standard c for the reception of the longer hair at the end of the mustache. (See Fig.
The horizontal member of the clamping-bar d2 is substantially parallel with the comb-plate a and lies a short distance above the same in front of its teeth b to form a space between the two for the hair of the mustache, said clamping-bar swinging from and toward the comb-teeth on its pivot d4, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 3, showing one of the clamping-bars swung out. The comb-plate a has at its inner end a projection a that serves to lock the clamping-bar d2 into its operative or closed position, Figs. l and 2.
In i and 5 we have shown another form of mustache-guard in which the long leg d2 of the clamp-baris pivoted at d5 to the inner end of the plate a, so that the clampbar may be swung out in the reverse manner, as shown above. In order to secure the clamp-bar in its closed position the short leg d has a pin d"i screw-threaded at its outer end and adapted to engage a slot c of the branch or standard c, to which it can be locked by means of a nutf screwed on said pin o.
In using the improved mustache-guard the clamp-bars d d2 should iirst be opened or swung out, as indicated by Figs. 3 and 5. The two combs l) are then inserted into the mustache from beneath and the longer hairs at the ends ot' the mustache placed between the standards c and the short legs d' of the clainpingbars. The clamping-bars d2 may now be closed by swinging them back over the comb-plates a and over the hairs on said plates and locking them into their closed position. The hairs will thus be clamped in the mustache-holder and the latter attached to the mustache in such manner that the hairs, and especially the ends of the mustache, are supported and held away from the cheeks, as shown by Fig. 5, this being effected by the end guards c, between which and the short `leg d' of the clamping-bars the longer hairs at the ends of the mustache are held. The
IOO
mustache is thereby prevented from being lathered or out off by the razor in shaving.
Having thus described our invention, what We claiin as new therein7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a mustache-guard, the combination with two comb-plates articulated together and having their teeth at right angles to their bases, and a guard-ar1n o at the outer end of said bases; of clamping-rods adapted to suing to and from the teeth of the Comb-plates above the bases thereof and provided at their outer end with a guard-arm7 said rods and their guard-arms co-operating with the teeth of the comb-plates and the guardearins c thereof to clamp the mustache to said teeth and hold the longer hairs at the end of the mustache away from the face, for the pur pose set forth.
2. A mustache-guard coinprisin g two colnbplates articulated together and provided at their outer end with an arin c and clampingrods CZ2 for clamping the mustache to the comb-plates7 said rods provided at their outer end with an arni CZ forming with the aforesaid arins c a guard adapted to hold the longer hairs at the mustache ends away from the face, substantially as set forth.
3. In a mustache-guard, the combination With a comb-plate a. Z), provided at its outer end With the inWardly-curved guard c having forined therein a recess 0'; of the clampingrod (Z2 pivoted to the base ce of said combplate at its inner end, said rod provided at its outer end with a guard-arn1 CZ (Z3 adapted I to be locked in the aforesaid recess c of the guard c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention We have signed our names, in presence of two \vitnesses,this 7th day of June, 1895.
