Be it known that I, HENRY H. NoREnveToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'est Bay City, county of Bay, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Savings-Banks; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a savingsbank, the same having reference more particularly to the provision of a bank which may be col lapsed for shipment, &c., and which may readily be expanded for use.

My invention consists of the structure hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in perspective, showing the bank expanded. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation, show ing the bank collapsed. Fig. 4c is a crosssection on the line 4: l, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective, showing a modification in the form of the device. Fig. 6 is a view of the device shown in Fig. 5, the same being collapsed. Fig. '7 is an end view of the modified form.

I carry out my invention as follows:

As shown in Figs. 1 to l, A represents a middle band or rim made of any suitable material, the same being provided with an orifice, as at a, for the reception of money into the bank.

13 and denote heads of suitable material made slightly smaller than the band A, and connected therewith by flexible fabric or material, (indicated at D and E,) the structure being such that the heads B O, with the flexible material D E, may be folded or telescoped into the band A when the bank is collapsed, as indicated in Fig. 3.

To hold the bank in expanded position I provide a base F, which maybe made of cardboard or any other suitable material, on the under side of which is engaged an elastic band G, as of rubber, said band being held in place in any suitable way-as, for example, by means of a staple H. The extremities of the band G are engaged with the two heads or ends B C, said heads or ends being provided with hooks J or other proper fastening means, whereby the elastic band may readily be engaged with said heads. It will be convenient simply to pass a staple through said heads, the points of the staple being bent in opposite directions, as shown, over which points the elastic band may be fastened to hold the bank in expanded position upon the base or card. The card on its upper face is provided with a metallic arm or spring K, slipped through an eye or ring L upon the band A, to hold the bank in engagement with the card or base F. This metal strip K so engaged holds the bank in position on the base, but when the band Gis unfastened from the hooks J this metallic strip K maybe withdrawn from the eye or loop L, permitting the ends or heads B G with the elastic fabrics D E to be collapsed into the band A. Vhen so collapsed, the device is in a small compass for mailing and analogous purposes.

I do not limit myself to any particular shape of the structure, as it may be made round, or square, or of any other desired form. lYithin the band A, adjacent to the orifice a, I contemplate the provision of a suitable flap or other analogous device M to prevent the money from being shaken out of the bank.

The modified form of the device (shown in Figs. to '7) is in its construction every way analogous to a portion, simply, of the structure disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4', the heads B and flexible material D (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) being omitted, and the band A being closed or headed up, the slot to being formed in the end instead of on the periphery or outer edge of the band. In this case it will be seen that the head 0 telescopes into the band A as before, the flexible band G engaging fastenings, as at J, upon the band A and head G.

Obviously the device is economical, simple,

and eflicient for the purpose required.

Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. In a savings-bank, the combination of the band A, the heads B C, flexible material connecting said heads with said band, a base, and means of connecting the other portions of the bank with said base, substantially as set forth.

2. In a savings-bank, the combination of a collapsible bank, a base, and an elastic band secured to the extremities of the collapsible bank, and to the base, to hold the bank in an expanded position, substantially as set forth.

3. In a savings-bank, the combination of a central band A provided with an orifice therein, heads B O constructed to telescope into the band A, flexible material connecting said heads with said band a base, and means for holding the heads B O in expanded position upon said base, substantially as set forth.
