Description

(No Model.)
A. H. JONES. WIG K ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR CENTRAL DRAFT LAMPS. No. 554,935.
Patented Feb. 18, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE AUGUSTUS H, JONES, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE MERIDEN BRONZE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WICK- ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR CENTRAL-DRAFT LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,935, dated February 18, 1896. Application filed April 1, 1895. $erial No. 544,003. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS H. JONES, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Wick-Adjusting Devices for Central-Draft Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a broken View, partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, of one form which a lamp provided with my invention may assume; Fig. 2, a detached view, in side elevation, of the rotatable finger-button; Fig. 3, a reverse plan view thereof; Fig. 4, a detached view, in vertical central section, of the cap in which the finger-button is mounted.
My invention relates to an improved wickadjusting device for central-draft lamps, of that class which provide for the direct plunging and lifting of the wick through the medium of a draw-bar, and for a fine adjustment of the wick through the medium of a rotatable finger-button, the object being to produce a convenient and effective device constructed with particular reference to convenience of operation and fewness and cheapness of parts.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a wick-adjusting device for central-draft lamps, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as
will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a draw-bar having an inner leg, A, and an outer leg, A, arranged parallel with it. As herein shown, the inner leg is turned inward at a right angle at its lower end to form an arm a, which is designed to be inserted into an outwardly-projecting horizontal socket B carried by the wick band or holder B; but I do not limit myself to any particular Way of connecting the lower end of the leg A with the wick holder or carrier, nor to constructing the same in any particular manner. As
herein shown, the upper end of the inner leg, A, is turned outward in a horizontal plane to form a reach A with which the upper end medium of a coupling C, consisting, as shown, of a small ball. The lower end of the outer leg has very coarsely-pitched screw-threads a a formed in it, and passes downward into the lamp-fount D through the central longitudinal opening E of a rotatable finger-button E and the hub E thereof, the said button and hub being solid and integral, as shown, and the hub being constructed at its lower end with two inward projections e e which take into the threads aforesaid. As shown, these projections are formed integral with the hub, but they may be formed independent of the same and mounted therein. If desired, the button and hub may be made independent of each other and secured together. The said finger-button has bearing upon the fiat upper face of a cap F, which is constructed with a central opening F adapted to receive the hub, and with a downwardly-projecting inwardly-turned annular flange F which takes into an annular circumferential recess E formed in the hub, whereby the button is firmly coupled with the cap for rotation therein independent thereof, but prevented from longitudinal movement with respect to the cap, from which it is separated by a fibrous or other antifriction washer G. The said cap is internally threaded and screwed over an externally-threaded nipple H mounted in the fount D, the inner face of the fiat upper end of the cap screwing down upon the upper end of the nipple, so as to impinge thereupon. Under this particular construction oil is prevented from working out of the fount through.
the nipple and cap, which it would be likely to do if the cap were replaced by a nut screwing into the nipple on the inside thereof.
It will be clearly understood from the foregoing description that by grasping the drawbar either by the reach A of the inner leg, or in any other manner in which it may be grasped, it may be thrust down and lifted up for suddenly plunging the wick or quickly lifting the same, the rotatable finger-button idly rotating in one direction or the other under the influence of the threaded outer leg of the bar. On the other hand, by rotating the said button in one direction or the other the bar may be carefully raised and lowered, and hence the wick, for securing a fine adjustment of the same. My device therefore provides in one organization for plunging and lifting the wick, as well as for adjusting the same under the control of a screw. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a wick-adj usting device for central-draft lamps, the combination. with the lan1p-fount and the central-draft tube thereof, of awickcarrier, at draw-bar having an inner leg and an outer leg arranged parallel with each other and connected together at their upper ends, the inner leg passing downward through the top of the lamp-fount and connected at its lower end with the wick-carrier, and the outer leg having its lower end constructed with screw-threads of coarse pitch, a nipple mounted in the top of the lamp-fount, a removable cap applied to the said nipple and having a central opening, and a flange located below the same, a rotatable finger-button bearing upon the said removable cap, and constructed with a hub passing downward through the central opening thereof and furnished with a circumferential groove receiving the said flange and constructed with one or more inward projections taking into the threads of the outer leg of the bar which passes downward through the central opening of the button and the hub thereof, the threads of the outer leg of the bar and the projection or projections of the hub of the button being constructed to permit the bar to be plunged or raised by a direct thruster lift at which time the button idly rotates in one direction or the other, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUSTUS ll. JUNE.
