Description

UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALDEN BRIGHAM, OF GOLDBROOK, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED DUST RANGE OR RECEPTACLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,458., dated June 12, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ALBEN BEIGHAM, of
Coldbrook, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have 'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust Ranges and Receptacles 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speeication, in which- Figure l represents a top or plan view of my device, the cover being open. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the device with cover closed. Fig. 3 represents a bottom view ofthe device as shown in Fig. l with slide-bottom partially open; and Fi 4 represen ts a vertical central section of the device when open both at top and bottom, as shown in Fig. 3, but otherwise shown as it appears when in proper position in the door for use.
In the drawings, A represents a rectangular box having a sliding bottoni, B, which works in grooves a in the sides and end of A, as indicated in the drawings. The top G has openings b b, and is recessed or out out to receive the cover D, which turns upon a fulcrum or point, j', and has openings c out out or otherwise formed to correspond with the openings b in the top (l, so that when the cover D is turned into the position shown in Fig. l there will be free openings from the top into the inside of the range or receptacle, while when cover D is turned into the position'shown in Fig. 2 openings b will be closed, as clearly indicated in the drawings.
To use the device the floor is eut away to receive the device, as shown in Fig. 4, in which E represents a section of the floor. Before this device is placed in this position bottom B is slid in, so as to completely close the bottom of the box A.
It will thus be seen that when cover D is open, as shown in Fig. l. the dirt and dust upon the tloor or lioors may be swept into the box A, after which the cover D may be closed by turningitinto the position shown in Fig. 2. When from several sweepin gs the box A requires to be emptied, the entire device can be easily lifted from the floor and carried to a proper place, and the dirt removed by drawing out slide-bottom B.
d is a pin, fastened to cover D to prevent the. latter from moving too far in either direction.
By the use of my device the tedious labor of usinga dust-pan and brush to take up and remove the dirt at each sweeping is obviated.
The device has been applied to actual use and gives perfect satisfaction, and there is an increasing demand for the article.
vThe device may be made of any desired shape. In practice [prefer to make the top G of cast metal, and the box A and slide-bottom B of wood. The boXA can be easily fastened to the top C by screws.
Having described 1n yim proved device, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A dust range and receptacle, as a new article of manufacture, the same consisting of a box with top flanges, whereby it is held in the floor, and sliding bottom and register-cover, all the parts being constructed and arranged for use as set forth.
