BELT.
N0. 554,478. Patented Feb. 11, 1896.
WITNESSES: //Vl/E/VTO/f a. W W
ATENT OFFICE.
EMILY COOPER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,478, dated February 11, 1896.
Application filed June 15, 1895. Serial No. 552,874. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMILY COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belts, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my present invention is to provide a neat, durable, convenient, efficient, and comparatively inexpensive combinationand arrangement of parts whereby accidental separation of a belt and the back portion of a skirt-band or of a shirt, blouse, or other waist orboth is avoided; and to this end my invention consists of the improvements hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawin gs, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a belt, showing my improvements in application thereto; and Fig. 2 is a sectional View drawn to an enlarged scale and taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 is a belt, which may be of silk or satin ribbon or webbing or of any other material suitable or appropriate for the purpose.
2 is a safety-pin of the usual or of any preferred type located upon the inside of the back or other portion of the belt 1 and disposed preferably intermediate of its top and bottom edges or margins, as shown.
3 is a stiffener of leather or other desired material stitched or sewed at its top and bottom edges, as 4, to the corresponding margins of the belt 1. Obviously this stitching or sewing may be done at a factory, or the parts, except the belt, may be put or fitted together, in a manner to be presently described, at the factory, in which case the belt could be sewed onto the stiffener by the user or purchaser. As illustrated, this stiffener 3 is not quite as wide as the belt 1, so that it may be joined thereto by stitches that pass over its edges.
Moreover, this stiffener 3 extends beyond the ends of the pin 2, as shown at 5, and consequently protects the belt from injury.
6 is a knuckle that encompasses the bar or back rod 7 of the safety-pin 2, and thus so supports or hinges thelatter as that it may be turned for purposes of insertion and use.
8 are rivets or clips attached to the shank of the knuckle (5 and penetrating the stiffener 3 and concealed by the belt 1, as shown in Fig. 2.
In use the pin 2 is inserted into the skirtband or waist or both, and the belt is fastened in the usual manner. Under these circumstances accidental separation of the garments is prevented and neatness of appearance insured. Moreover, the stiffener 3, while itself concealed, serves to prevent wrinkling of the belt, affords means for supporting the knuckle 6 and pin 2 in such manner that the fastenings 8 are concealed, and also protects the belt from accidental injury from the ends of the pin.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with, a belt and a safety pin and its complemental knuckle in which the bar of the pin is hinged, of a stiffener carrying said knuckle and attached at its edges to the margins of the belt and extending in rear of and beyond the ends of the pin to conceal the same and protect the belt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
EMILY COOPER. In presence of- K. M. GILLIGAN, A. B. STOUGHTON.
