To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARKS SAMUELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a folding bed which being made entirely of metal will be of compact structure and of light weight, so as to be readilyoperated and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the an nexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bed open. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the bed open. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bed partly folded or closed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the bed closed. Fig. 5 is a section along a: as, Fig. 1.

The head part 1 of the bed is supported on legs 2 and has the side bars 3 to which at 4 is jointed a bed portion, the bed being shown as a double folding bed or a bed with two folding portions or sections jointed together at 5. The bed portions or sections are shown formed of lattice or open work. The headsection comprises the longitudinal bars 6 and '7 united by the diagonal crossing bars 8, and the foot-section comprises the longitudinal bars 9 and 10 united by the diagonal crossing bars 11. The joint 5 connects the'upper longitudinal bars 6 and 9, and the lower longitudinal bars 7 and 10 are provided with tongueand- groove connection 12 and 13 adapted to engage and disengage as the bed is opened and closed. The engagement of tongue 12 with groove or hole 13 whenthe bed is open,

Fig. 1, secures a proper alignment or steadying of the sections.

To the lower longitudinal bars 10 at the free or foot end of thefoot-section 9 1O 11 is jointed a swinging foot or support 14 at 15. Acatch or look 16 is jointed at 17 to the headsection 6 7 8, and when the bed is folded or being folded, Figs. 1 and 3, the lock or latch 16 will hold the foot 14 in folded position by engaging said foot or a suitable stud 18 on said foot;

The foot 14 has a part 19 made to extend above or beyond the upper longitudinal bars 9 of the foot-section, and the flexible bed-bot tom 20 has one end secured to said upwardlyextending portion 19 ofthe foot 14, so that said bed-bottom is suitably tightened or slackened as the bed is opened or closed.

The cross-piece or cross-pieces 21 are provided with holes 22, Fig. 5, arranged in pairs, and the coiled springs 23 seated on the crosspieces 21 have each a'portion 24 of the spring body or wire inserted into a pair of said holes so as to be held securely in place for properly supporting the flexible bottom 20.

The swinging support 25 for the head-section has the link 26 jointed to said support and to a suitable part of the head part 1, said support 25 opening and folding as the bed is opened and folded. To the head-section at 27 is jointed the head-rest 28, connected by an eye or sliding connection 29 to a bar 30 of head part 1.

The head and foot sections fold onto one another, as seen in Fig. 4, so that when the bed is closed it occupies but little height or space, and the various parts of the bed are all made of iron or metal, so as to be strong or durable. The lattice or open work of the head and foot sections 6 7 8 and 9 1O 11 enables the bed even when of metal to be constructed extremely light, so as to be easily opened or folded even when handled by weaker persons, such as women or children.

When the bed is closed or folded, as seen in Fig. 4, the part forming the front, or, in other words, portions 7, which are exposed, can be closed or provided with a suitable covering in case the exposure is deemed objectionable.

I am aware that metallic folding beds have been made in which the folding part was of one piece or section instead of two folding portions, as above described. By having two folding portions the folded bed is made low such hollow portions possessing considerable strength without being excessively heavy.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A folding bed having its folding portion double or in two sections forming a head and a foot section, each section comprising two longitudinal bars provided with diagonal cross-bars, the upper longitudinal bars of the sections being jointed together, and the lower longitudinal bars of said sections being provided with a tongue-and-groove connection adapted to engage and disengage as the bed is opened and closed substantially as described.

2. A folding bed having its folding portion double or in two sections forming a head and a foot section, each section comprising two longitudinal bars provided with diagonal cross-bars, the upper longitudinal bars of the sections being jointed together, and the lower longitudinal bars of said sections being pro- Vided with a tongue-and-groove connection adapted to engage and disengage as the bed is opened and closed, and a swinging foot or support jointed to the lower longitudinal bars at the free or foot end of the foot-section, said head-section having a latch or look jointed to an upper longitudinal bar and adapted to engage or hold said foot in folded position substantially as described.

A folding bed having its folding portion double or in two sections forming a head and a foot section, each section comprising two longitudinal bars provided with diagonal cross-bars, the upper longitudinal bars of the sections being jointed together, and the lower longitudinal bars of said sections being provided with a tongue-and-groove connection adapted to engage and disengage as the bed is opened and closed, and a swinging foot or support jointed to the lower longitudinal bars at the free or foot end of the foot-section, said foot being made to extend above or beyond the upper longitudinal bars of said foot-sec tion, and a flexible bottom having one end secured to said upwardly-extending portion of the foot substantially as described.
