Description

lUNIFTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
JOHN M. ENOS, OF ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND FRANKLIN SMEAD, OF THE SAME PLAGE.
IMPRovl-:D MOP AN'D WRINGER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 55,413, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. ENOS, of St. Joseph, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mop-Wrin gers 5 and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, making reference to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form. part of this specification.
The nature ot' my said invention consists in a novel device to be lused in connection with a mop, being removably attached to the handle thereof and so arranged that the mop can he easily and thoroughly wrun g out thereby when desired without the necessity of touching the mop with the hands, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure l represents a plan or top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side or edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the process of wringing out the mop. Y
Similar-letters of referencein the several gures denote the same parts of my invention.
A represents an ordinary mop-head provided with a handle, B, said mop-head A being provided with jaws which are adjusted by means of a screw, so as to hold the cloths composing the mop M securely therein.
D represents a ring around the handle B, provided with a pin or rod (marked a.) lying parallel to said handle B, as shown.
O represents a strong wire of suitable size and material bent into a shape substantially as represented, the wider enlargement being designed to correspond with the width of the mop-head, forming a place for passing the mop through, as shown, and the cross arrangement at the opposite end ofthe wringer serving as a handle whereby the device is turned in wringing outthe mop.
E represents a band passing around the parallel arms or handle of the wringer O, for the purpose of holding a longitudinal socket Ato slide down upon the aforesaid pin a, to retain the wrin ger in proper position with respect to the mop and its handle, as shown.
The mop M is passed through the jaws of the mop-head and through the head of the wringer; the ends'of the material being then sewed together, or the ends may be secured to said wringer, as preferred.
When it is desired to wring ont the mop the ymop-head may be laid upon the edge of the pail or bucket and the wringer detached from the pin a and raised up, as shown in Fig. 3, when, by grasping the handle thereof, the mop may be twisted and wrnng out perfectly, the operator not being obliged even to wet her hands in the operation. When the mop is wrung out the wringer may be replaced upon its support a, as before.
Instead of having the wringer constructed of a single piece of wire, as herein shown, it may be constructed in any form which will operate in substantially the same way, and the parallel parts may be formed as a single arm provided with any suitable provision for turn'- ing the same.
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, I will now proceed to specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination and arrangement of the wringer O, when constructed substantially as shown, with the mo'p M, mop-head A, and handle B, provided with a pin, a/,operating substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN M. ENOS. Witnesses:
W. E. MARES, J. W. HERTHEL.
