SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,969, dated February 4, 1896. Application filed January l5, 1895. Serial No. 534,965. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOHN H. STEVENS, J r., of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Legs for Bath-Tubs and other Articles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to legs for bath-tubs' and other articles, and especiallyT to the attachment of anon-corrodible foot to a metallic leg and is an improvement upon the invention described in another application of mine, filed October 29, 1894, Serial No. 527,283; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings, and to the claim hereto appended and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure l of the drawings is a sectional elevation of a leg, illustrating one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the non-corrodible foot. Fig. 3 is an inverted sectional plan of the metal portion of the leg with the non-corrodible foot removed, the cuttingplane being on line oc on Fig. l.
In the drawings, A is the metallic portion of the leg, which may be made in one piece or in two pieces adjustably connected together, as may be preferred, andB is a foot of glass, porcelain, or other non-corrodible material secured to the metallic leg in the manner hereinafter described.
In carrying out my invention I form the foot B preferably of glass or porcelain, and to facilitate its construction and cheapen its cost I form it with arecess or cavity in its upper side. The foot B is provided with a circumferential groove Z2 near its upper end and is fitted to a socket a of a hemispherical form, formed in the lower end of the metal leg A, but only partially filling said socket, as shown in Fig. l. The socket d has formed just above its lower edge or rim an annular groove a and that portion of the foot B which extends above said groove a bears closely against the inner wall of the socket, except that at a plurality of points upwardly-extending channels c c are formed in the inner wall of said socket or recess leading from said groove a to points above the upper end of the foot B, as shown in Figs. l andl 3.
C is a packing of a plastic or semiliquid nature, preferably a combination of plasterof-paris and cement, applied so as to fill the entire space of the socket d not occupied by the foot B, the grooves a and b and the cavity in said foot, and extend upward into the central bore d2 of the lower part of said leg, as shown in Fig. l.
In uniting the leg and foot according to my invention the socket in the leg A has placed therein a suitable quantity 4of the plastic or semiliquid packing material', the hole a2 being` temporarily closed to prevent said semiliquid running to waste. Then the two parts-the leg and foot-are forced together by pressure, when the plastic packing becoming hard the two parts areiirmly secured together.
I claim- In a leg for bath-tubs and other articles, the combination of a metallic leg-body having a socket or recess in its lower end; an annular groove or enlargement in the wall of said socket just inside of its mouth; a noncorrodible foot tted to said socket so as to bear upon the wall of said socket above the annular groove in said socket, but only partially filling the same; a circumferential groove formed on said foot near its upper end and substantially opposite the annular groove in the inner wall of said socket; a plurality of passages connecting the annular space inclosed by said annular grooves with the space above said foot; and a packing iilling the entire space in said socket not occupied by said foot including said annularl grooves and the passages leading therefrom to the space above said foot.
