V J. OLIVER. MOLDBOARD FOR PLOWS.
No. 553,930 Patented Feb. 4, 1896.
AN DREW E4GRANAMfNDTU-LITHQWASHINGTONJ C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES OLIVER, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE SOUTH BEND IRON WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
-MOLDBOARD FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,930, dated February 4, 1896. Application filed Sptember'lfi, 1895. Serial No. 562,685. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES OLIVER, a resident of South Bend, in the county of St. J oseph and State of Indiana, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Moldboards for Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in moldboards for plows, the object of the invention being to so construct a chilled moldboard that it will not be weakened on account of having been chilled.
A further object is to so construct a chilled moldboard that any tendency to warp or twist will be effectually obviated.
A further object is to construct a moldboard in such manner that perfect uniformity will be maintained in all the castings, so that the shape and strength of the moldboard will be preserved, and so that the moldboard can be chilled to a desired depth,
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out creased thickness between the grooves formed by said ribs.
The moldboard will be chilled, but the ribs on the back of the moldboard will not be chilled. Said ribs may be of gray iron.
Heretofore in order to get and retain the proper shape of the moldboard it was necessary to chill the metal its entire thickness, and this occasioned loss .of strength; but by myimprovement the metal will be sufficiently chilled for all desired purposes, and yet the strength will be preserved. 1
By my improvement any tendency of the moldboard to warp or twist is prevented, and strength is added to the moldboard, because cast-iron of such chemical composition can be used that the chilled iron only extends to the ribs.
My improvements are very simple, and result in the production of a chilled moldboard superior in strength, as well as in other respects, to chilled moldboards now in use.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A moldboard chilled throughout its thickness and curved transversely in the usual manner, said moldboard having a smooth outer surface and provided on its rear surface with unchilled ribs or corrugations which extend longitudinally of the moldboard, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
