Description

(No Model.) I i v L'. G. THOMPSON. DUPLICATE WHIST BOARD.
No.,553,741 I Patented Jan. 28, 1896.

A TTOHNE VS.
NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
LUCIUS CARROLL THOMPSON, OF ROLFE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUPLlCATE-WHIST BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,741, dated January 28, 1896.
Application filed July 15, 1895. Serial No. 556,044. (No model.)
To allwhom it may concern.-
Be it known that LLUoIUs CARROLL THOMP- SON, of Rolfe, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Duplicate-'hist Board, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in duplicatewhist boards; and the object of the invention is to provide a means for attaching the counters to the board, which means will be also employed for holding the cards in place on the board; and a further object of the invention is to so construct the board that auxiliary counters may be placed thereon, which in no manner confuse the regular counters, and, furthermore, to so form the board that the corners at opposite sides will be of different arrangement, so as to provide for a proper location of the board in original and duplicate.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be'hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of the improved game-board, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, the board A may be of any desired material and of any desired size, and is provided upon one side with opposing rounded corners 10, the corners at the opposite side being square, as shown at 11 in Fig. 1, the board being made to approximate a rectangular shape. In diagonally-opposite corners a circular scale 12 is made, reading, for example, from 1 to 13 or more, and a pointer 14 is provided for each scale, being adapted to extend over any one number in the scale. Opposite each corner of the board, preferably, two eyelets 15 are made therein, or equivalent openings are produced, and a cord 16, which may be elastic or nonelastic, is threaded through the aforesaid eyelets so as to form four loops a, one being parallel with each side, and these loops are upon the upper face of the board, as shown in Fig. 1, shorter loops a being at the corners and upon the under face of the board, as shown in dotted lines in the same figure.
Each long loop a is provided with a pointer 17 held to slide thereon, which may be carried to any one of a row of figures 18, located on the board, preferably within the loops a and parallel therewith. The pointers 17 may be lifted up so that the packs of cards, or the hands played or to be played, may be placed one under each of the aforesaid loops a. Thus these loops serve not only as guides or pointers, but likewise as a holder -or clamping device for the cards, and the counting may be done either by means of the pointers 17 on theaforesaid' loops or the pointers 14 on the corner dials.
The oval or rounded corners 10 are to be kept toward one person in original play, and in duplicate play they are to be kept by the left-hand adversary. Three of the indexed pointers 17 are of one color, while the fourth is to be of a different color and is adapted to d enote what person has had the lead. These pointers maybe made of celluloid, or of metal, or of any desired material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A whist game-board provided on its upper side with four rows of numerals parallel with its respective edges and forming an open central rectangular field, a loop for each row of numerals extending parallel therewith and formed of flexible material adapted to be flexed upwardly to admit the cards thereunder and hold them down on the board, and a pointer sliding on every loop and extending toward said numerals, substantially as described.
2. A whist game-board provided on its upper side with four rows of numerals forming a rectangle or square, a flexible strand laced through the corners of the board and forming four loops on the upper side thereof parallel with the respective rows of numerals and a pointer sliding on every loop and extending toward said numerals, substantially as described.
3. A whist game-board provided on its upper side with four rows of numerals forming a rectangle or square, a flexible strand laced through the board and forming four loops 011 ICO the upper side thereof parallel with the respective rows of numerals, a sliding pointer on every 100p and extending toward the said numerals, circularly arranged numerals 0n the upper face of the board at diagonally opposite corners and over the spaces Where the strand passes under the board, and a pivoted pointer Within each of said circles, substantially as described.
