. M. WITT. VESSEL FOR REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE AND COVER FOR SAME. No. 552,948. 4 Patented Jan. 14, 1896.
one a o o o o o 0000 is o o o UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN WITT, OF NEUMIINSTER, GERMANY.
VESSEL FOR REMOVAL OF HOUSE'REFUSE AND COVER FOR SAME.
a SPECIFICATION forming part (if Letters Patent No. 552,948, dated January 14, 1896. Applicati n l September 7, 1895. Serial No. 561,797. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN \VITT, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Neumiinster, Holstein, in the German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Vessel for the Removal of House and other Refuse with Hermetically-Olosin g Cover, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved receptacle for garbage, dust, sweepings and the like.
This receptacle is cheap and therefore offers no difficulty in introducing the same in households,as by reason of its simplicity of construction it can be manufactured at a moderate charge and will be readily accepted and welcomed by housekeepers, ofiering the great advantage that in transporting the receptacle for emptying there is no dust nor smell escaping and the contents are always hermetically sealed in the vessel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a receptacle embodying my invention in. side elevation, having the cover removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, with the cover in place.
The side wall a of the receptacle is made of strong sheet-iron, the upper edge of which is turned outside into a rounded bead b. The lower edge is strengthened by a heavy iron ring 6, which protects the receptacle against injury.
The bead 1) extends over a ring or hoop of angle-iron c, which is riveted to the side of the receptacle. The same is provided with handles d, and the form is preferably flared upwardly to facilitate the emptying out of the vessel.
The cover consists of an iron plate g, the ring f of tightening material-such as felt, &c.and the second iron plate h, which is bulged. These three parts are riveted together in such a way that the edge of the tightening-ring is held between the plates h and 9.
To close the cover upon the receptacle the following device is employed: The iron yoke it engages with its hooked ends 72. under the hoop of angle-iron c and is pressed against this hoop c by the screw 11 acting upon the central plate i of the cover. The latter is pressed at the same time upon the vessel, and as the tightening-ring bears upon the bead b no gases can emanate from the interior of the receptacle. The bulged plate of the cover yields in soine Way like a spring and thereby evens out the pressure.
The head of the screw Z is provided with a ring or handle m, serving to tighten or loosen the screw and at the same time to carry the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the receptacle having an edge I) and a ring 0 thereunder, a cover having a spring top, a ring f of elastic material, the plate 9 below and united with said ring f and the cover and serving to keep the edge of the cover and said ring horizontal while the cover springs downward, a yoke 7s, and a screw Z, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN IVITT.
