DUPLICATING SALES-BOOK DR SHIPPING-RECEIPT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,765, dated January '7, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LOUIS S. LANG, of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicating Sales-Books or Ship ping-Receipts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to produce an improved sales-book or shipping-receipts pad by the use of which the salesman is enabled to make an original and a duplicate record simultaneously of the sale made or receipt given; and it consists in the employment of simple and efficient means for removably attaching the blank-pad and a carbon to asuitable back.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of the sales-book, showing the lower half of one of the sales-blanks about to be placed upon the carbon. Fig. II is a similar view showing the sales-blank about to be detached. Fig. III is a side elevation, and Fig. IV is a similar view showing the retaining-clips thrown back. Fig. V is a detail view showing the pad-cushion and pad-retaining clip. Fig. VI is a view of a modified form of retaining-clip and carbon-holder, and Fig. VII is a detail view of a modified form of pad-retaining device.

Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates a back, of suitable material, preferably leather, pasteboard or the like, and of any suitable size or shape.

2 indicates a sales-blank pad provided along its upper edge with a pad-cushion 3 of any suitable material designed to be engaged and penetrated by the points a of a pad-retaining plate 5secured adjacent to the upper edge of the back.

The pad-retaining plate 5 is transversely concave, as illustrated, in order that its lower edge 6 may be raised slightly from the sur face of the back for a purpose presently to be described.

7 indicates a carbon-holder constructed of spring sheet metal doubled transversely upon itself to form a pocket 8 for the turned-down edge 9 of the carbon 10. The face-plate 11 of the carbon-holder is bent to form a compound curve to constitute its lower or doubled edge 12 a retaining-clip. The back plate 13 of the carbon-holder is gradually curved so that its upper edge 14, which is a considerable distance below the face-plate, bears against the carbon and salesblank pad.

15 and 16 indicate a pair of retaining-clips pivoted upon a common pivot-pin at the rear side of the back, and U-shaped in cross-see tion, which are designed to be turned down to securely clamp the carbon-holder and salesblank pad to the back. Under the impulse of this clamping action of the retaining-clips it will be seen that the carbon-holder will be somewhat compressed, the upper edge of the back plate pressing with a strong spring action against the carbon and blank pad and forcing the pad-cushion securely against the points of the pad-retaining plate. At the same time the lower or clip edge of the carbon-holder will be forced down, and the carbon and blanks will be retained securely between it and the upturned lower edge 6 of the pad-retaining plate. A reinforcing-plate 17 may be provided. between the rear side of the back and the retaining-clips, if desired.

In use the manipulation of my device is as follows: Supposingthe salesman having completed a sale to be desirous of making a rec- 0rd for transmittal either to the cashier or to the customer and to simultaneously produce a carbon copy of the record, the lower edge of the upper sales-blank, which projects a considerable distance beyond the carbon is turned down upon the carbon, as shown in Fig. I, and the sale is recorded upon the portion above the carbon. The carbon in the manner well understood traces a duplicate copy upon the upper half of the sales-blank immediately beneath it, and the carbon having been turned up over the carbon-holder the blank is torn off, the clip edge of the carbon-holder constituting a straight edge for this purpose. It may be desirable in some instances to provide a line of perforations upon the sales-blank along the edge of the clip and between the original and duplicate records. lVhen it is desired to remove the carbon-holder and blank-pad from the back for the purpose of ren ewal, the clips are turned back and the carbon and pad are immediately released, the spring action of the carbonholder causing the pocket to spring open.

It will be seen that by reason of the various retaining devices being made of spring metal and formed in the manner described, the carbon and blanks will be firmly secured under the compression of the retaining-clips. Or-

dinarily the resiliency of the retaining-clips is sufficient to provide against their casual displacement, but as an additional security I prefer to provide proj eetion's stamped or otherwise formed upon the face-plate of the carbon-holder and designed to spring into depressions in the retaining-clips when the latter are forced to place.

In Fig. VI of the drawings I have illustrated a modification of the retaining-clip in which a single clip is used, extending substantially from one side to the other of the back 1, provided with a retaining-plate 5, provided with points 4 and a resilient edge 6.

In Fig. VII, I have shown a modified form of check-pad-retaining device,which consists in providing a tab 3 secured at the upper edge of the pad and passing underneath the pad 2 retaining-plate 5".

I do not desire to limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but reserve the right to modify and vary them at will within the scope of my invention.

WVhat I claim is 1. The combination with a back, pad retaining plate, blank pad, and co-operating mechanism upon the pad retaining plate and blank-pad, a carbon holder, and a retaining clip designed to clamp the carbon holder, pad and back, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a back and retaining clip, of a blank-pad, a carbon and a carbon holder provided with a curved resilient face plate, and a curved resilient back plate designed to be pressed against the pad by the retaining clip to secure the former in place, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with a concave pad retaining plate provided with retaining points and blank-pad provided with a pad retaining cushion designed to be engaged by the points, of a carbon holder provided with a compoundcurved face plate and a curved back plate, and a retaining clip for clamping the carbon holder, pad and back, substantially as specified.

4. The combination with a concave pad retaining plate provided with retaining points and blank-pad provided with a pad retaining cushion designed to be engaged by the points, a carbon holder provided with a compoundcurved face plate and curved back plate, a retaining clip for clamping the carbon holder, pad and back, and means other than the resiliency of the retaining clip for retaining the same in position, substantially as specified.
