JVILLIAM A. RUPERT AND SAYLES J. FRAZIER, OF' CONNEAUTVILLE, PENN- SYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS T() THE REVOLVING ADVERTISING CASE CO., OF
SAME PLACE.
REVOLVINQ ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,700, dated January *7, 1896.
Application iled April 24, 1895.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that We,WILLIAM A. RUPERT and SAYLEs J. FRAZIER, citizens of the United States, residing at Conneautville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Advertising Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the ro invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of i5 this specification.
Our invention consists in the improvements in revolving advertising devices hereinafter set forth and explained ,and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of ourV improved advertising device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 0c x in Fig. 2. The object of our invention is to construct an advertising device consisting of two or more vertical cylinders, one above the other, and revolving in opposite directions, the peripheries of these cylinders being made in any desired form suitable to 4receive and sup- 3o port advertising-cards or other matter desired to `be shown and advertised.
In the construction of our improved advertising device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, A is a frame or case for supporting 3 5 the mechanism hereinafter described.
In the lower part of the case A we place an upright cylinder B, (shown in the drawings as Octagon in its peripheral shape,) and on the bottom end of this cylinder we secure a hub 4o C, which projects down through the base A of the case A. In this hub O there is a socket c which iits over and rests upon the upper end d of the upright driving-shaft D, this shaft D being actuated by a spring E, and governed by a fan e geared to the shaft D. However, any ordinary power may be used to drive the shaft D, if desired. This driving mechanism is inclosed in a box F, secured to the base of the case A, andfor stopping the mechanism Serial No. 546,956. (No model.)
we use a stop-boltff, which, when pushed in the part f thereof, engages the fan e.
In the top of the hub C is a socket c', within which the lower end of a vertical rod l-I rests, the upperv end thereof being secured in the top of the case A by means of a nut h. On the top of the cylinder B is secured a plate h having a central opening h adapted to receive the rod I-I and forming a bearing for the upper end of the cylinder B. On the rod H, above the plate b, we secure a clamp I, on one side of which are ears t', between which the end of a rod J is pivoted, and on the outer end of the rod J is mounted a small wheel or roller J adapted to rotate on the plate ZJ. On the rod H, above the cylinder B, is secured a cylinder K, which is provided on its lower end with a plate 7c', and on its upper end with a like plate lo', these plates forming the bearings of the cylinder K on the rod I-I. When in place on the rod I-I, the plate 7c on the lower end of the cylinder K rests upon the top of the wheel or roller J', so that the cylinder K is entirely supported thereon. On the rod H is also a third cylinder L, having a bearing-plate l von its lower end and a small journal-plate Z on its upper end, adapted to slip over the rod H and form bearings thereon, and on the rod II there is a duplicate I J2 J3 of the clamp-rod and roller mechanism I J 2 J herei-nbefore described, the roller J 3 of which rests upon the plate 7c on the top of the cylinder K, and the plate Z on the cylinder L rests thereon and supports the cylinder L.
In operation, the cylinder B being driven by the clockwork mechanism hereinbefore described, the friction-roller J between the upper end thereof and the lowerend of the cylinder K communicates motion to the cylinder K, so as to rotate it in the direction of `the arrow thereon, or in the opposite direction to the rotation of the cylinder B, and the friction-roller J 3 on the top of the cylinder K en 'gaging with the bottom Vof the cylinder L operates to reverse the direction of the rotation `of the cylinder L to that of the cylinder K.
. We have shown three cylinders, but the number of cylinders, one above the other,
may be increased as may be desired, the con-` struction and operation of the parts being mere duplications thereof.
Having thus fully described our invention, so as to enable others to construct and operate the same, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,.is
l. In an advertising,` device, the combination, with a vertical rod, and two cylinders journaled one above the other on the said rod; of driving` mechanism for revolving one of the said cylinders, and a friction roller guided by the said rod and arranged between the adjacent heads of the said cylinders, whereby the motion of one cylinder is communicated to the other and in the reverse direction, substantially as set forth.
2. In anl advertising` device, the combina.- tion, with a vertical rod, and two` cylinders j ournaled one above the other on the saidrod and havingfriction platessecuredto their adjacent heads; of driving mechanism for revolving` one of the said cylinders, and a friction roller guided by the said rod and arranged between the said friction plates, substantially as set forth.
3. In an advertising device, the combination, with a vertical rod, and two cylinders journaled` one above the other on the said rod; of a clamp secured to the rod between the cylinders, a rod pivoted to the said clamp and free to move vertically, and a friction roller journaled on the end of the said rod and bearing against the adjacent heads of the cylinders, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presenceof two witnesses.
