To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS GILL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulland exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My inventlon relates to an improvement in advertising-wagons, and has for its object to obtain in a striking and attractive form an advertising apparatus on wheels for use in streets and thoroughfares, which may also subserve the purpose of .a delivery-wagon.

It consists in the combination, with each other and with the running-gear of a wagon, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed, of a series of vertical standards of large diameter each divided into four equal longitudinal sections alternately concave and convex in cross-section, and which are mounted to revolve upon vertical axesin such close proximity each to the other and with such relative adjustment as that the convex portion of the one standard will as they revolve intermesh with the concave portion of the next, whereby a large exterior surface is ob tained upon the standards with great economy of space in mounting them.

It consists, also, in the combination, with these revolving intcrineshing standards, of similar stationary standards mounted at each end of the series, having concavities on their inner side only, and which are adapted to receive and carry merchandise, the whole being constructed to obtain in a very compact form an extended surface for the display of advertisements and to subserve at the same time the purpose of a convenient delivery-wagon for goods.

G O in the drawings represent a series of vertical standards mounted to revolve side by side upon the platform D along its length, and which consist of hollow cylinders, each having diametrically-opposed segmental recesses or concavities a a,'formed longitudinally therein, said recesses being made concave in cross-section and of a uniform width corresponding with that of the convex portions of the cylinder. These longitudinallyrecessed cylindrical standards are placed. in such close proximity, and so adjusted, as shown in Fig. 2, that the convex peripheral face of the one shall enter and move through the corresponding concave recess in the face of the other as the cylinders revolve. The cylinders are preferably pivoted at. top and bottom upon axial pins D D The upper pins D are made to project from alongitudinal bar E, mounted above them. The lower pins D are each formed with an encircling flange or collar b, integral therewith or united thereto and made wide enough to furnish a bearing for the standard. This flange or collar l) rests upon friction rollers or balls 6 6, (see Fig. 1,) running in a concentric annular groove in a plate F upon the platform D, so as to reduce the friction of movement to the minimum. The lower end of each pin D is made to extend through the platform, and is geared by beveled pinions L L with a horizontal shaft M, rotating in suitable bearings under the platform. This shaft is geared to a counter-shaft N, which is in turn geared by a chain 0 and suitable sprocket-wheels Q 0 to the hub of one of the hind wheels A, as shown in Fig. 2.

At both the front and the rear of the wagon fixed standards 0' and 0 corresponding substantially in size and form with the revolving standards 0 C, may be mounted to complete the series. Said fixed standards are preferably provided with doors, either on the sides or at the ends of the wagon, so that the interior spaces may be utilized in the transportation ofmerchandise or articles of any description, as may be found desirable. The front standard 0 serves also to support the drivers seat P and a foot-board R. Asuitable canopy S may be fitted over the standards to complete the apparatus.

The vertical spaces upon the fixed and the revolving standards are designed to be covered with appropriate advertisements, and

the available surface for displaying the same is largely increased by the recessed form of;

the revolving standards, whose intermeshing as they revolve permits of the construction of an advertising device of extended surface in a very compact form.

In the operation of the device the rotation of the hind wheel, produced by the movement of the wagon will operate through the intervention of the shaft M and counter-shaft N geared thereto to produce a revolution of the standards 0 C, so that-the advertisements displayed thereon shall be exhibited alternately on each side of the wagon, the revolution thereof serving to attract attention thereto.

It is evident that instead of gearing the shaft M to the hind wheel the hind axle may be made torotate and be geared to said shaft to drive it, also that the pinsD' D may be connected in the form of a single axial rod or spindle as a support for each revolving standard G.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in an advertising-vehicle, with each other and witha running-gear therefor, of a series of vertical revolving standards driven by the movement of' the running-gear, each divided peripherally into four longitudinal sections alternately convex and concave in cross-section and mounted to.

intermesh as they revolve, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. The combination, in an advertising-vehicle, of a running-gear, a platform mounted thereon, a series of two or more vertical standards mounted to revolve in close proximity upon said platform, each divided peripherally into four longitudinal sections alternately convex and concave in cross-section and adjusted to intermesh as they revolve, a driving-shaft geared to each of said standards and to the running-gear to be driven by the latter, and fixed standards corresponding substantially in form with the revolving standards placed at each end of the series, one or both having internal compartments and doors opening therein, substantially in the manner. and for the purpose herein set forth.
