SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,640, dated January 7, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARON GROLLMANN, jeweler, a subject of the King of Bavaria, and a resident of Munich, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Penholder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The present invention relates to penholders; and it consists of a device by means of which the nib may be easily and conveniently ejected from the holder when worn out without the necessity of grasping the same in the fingers.

In order to make the present invention more easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the several views. i i

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the holder, showing the nib in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a back elevation of the holder; Fig. 3, a detail side elevation of the device for ejecting the nib, and Fig. i a section on the line a: 3 in Fig. 2.

The exterior sleeve a is of the ordinary construction, and its ends leave a vertical slot along the entire sleeve at the point where they almost join, as seen at Fig. 2. Within this sleeve a is arranged a sliding clamping-piece I), having a web I) arranged centrally and longitudinally thereof, so as to project into the .slot of the outer sleeve a, as shown at Fig. 4..

This web I) is provided at about its center with a horizontal slot d, in which a transverse pin 0 of the outer sleeve a lies. When the clamping-piece b b is in position in the sleeve ca the edge of the web 1) extends slightly forward of the outer line of circumference of the sleeve, and a ring g is arranged on the latter, which when pushed over the part of the sleeve in which the clamping-piece is retained, contacts with the edge of the latter and presses it fast against the opposite interior surface of the sleeve, so that a nib inserted between the said clamping-piece and the sleeve will be securely clamped in position. which may be grasped by the finger-nail, and when the ring has been pushed down the sleeve out of contact with the said web, the

clamping-piece may be moved on the pin 0 by means of this said notch.

In operation, if it is desired to eject a wornout pen, the ring 9 is first pushed down the sleeve until it no longer presses against the edge of the web I). The top of the web is then grasped by the finger-nail and the clamping-piece is drawn out, the web projecting through the slot of the sleeve. The said clamping-piece may then be tipped forward on its pin a and the pen-nib will fall out. A new pen may nowbe placed between the sleeve and clamping-piece and the ring pushed up into position so as to clamp the parts together.

I claim as my invention 1. In a penholder, the combination of a sleeve at having longitudinal slot throughout its length, a clamping piece I) curved to fit in said sleeve, a web I) to said clamping piece to project through and slightly beyond said sleeve slot, a ring g to slide on said sleeve and contactwith said projecting web edge, and means to secure said clamping piece in the upper part of the sleeve substantially as described.

2. The combination of a sleeve a having longitudinal slot, a clamping piece 1) to fit against the interior of said sleeve, a web b to said clamping piece, to project through said sleeve slot, a securing and clamping ring g on 80 said sleeve as specified, and a slot d in said web, and pin a fast in said sleeve to extend through the said slot 01 and means such as a notch f to grip said clamping piece in the manner and for the purpose substantially as de- 8 5 scribed.
