Beit known that I, HENRY EMANUEL PAO- LUocI, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Marcos, in the county` of l-Iays and VState of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton Weighers and Loaders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to an improved wei ghing and loading attachment for wagons.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient construction of combined weighing and loadsaid clamping frame or loop is adapted to engage. l
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the improved attachment complete and shown in operative position upon a wagon, a sufficient portion only of the latter being shown to illustrate the application of the weighing and loading device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the inclined beam or support which upholds the pivoted and swiveling lever. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the clamping-loop or wire support by means of which the main inclined support is connected with the tail-gate of the wagon.

Referringto the drawings, the main support or post designated by the reference-letparts in the several iigures of the ter A issecured to the rear end of a wagon in an inclined position, as shown, and is provided at its lower end witha downwardly-projecting pin or studo, which engages a perforation near the rear edge of the wagon-floorin g and Outside of or in rear of the tail-gate B. At
.the upper end said inclined support or post is provided with a metal eye a', `the shank of `which enters and isadapted to turn within a socket in the upper end of said support or post.
In order .to effectually support the inclined post or standard A and at the same time render the same capable of being easily detached from the wagon when the weighing and loading attachment is no longer required, I have provided a novel form of clamping-loop a2, which is made from a wire blank bent at its central portion to form a complete loop of a size corresponding to the dimensions of the inclined support A in cross-section, after which the terminals of said blank are crossed and extended in Opposite directions, at the same time being inclined in such manner as to bring the ends of the terminals to the opposite` ends of the tailgate or thereabout. The extremities of the terminals are each bent in such manner as to form a clamping-loop opening downwardly and adapted to be passed `over the upper edge or bar a3 of the tail-gate, as shown in Fig. l, whereby the clamping-loop or wire frame as a whole is securely held in place withrelation to the tailgate and is adapted by means of its central loop to embrace and firmly support the inclined post or standard A.
C designates a lifting and loading lever which is provided intermediate its ends, and preferably nearer to the rear end', with a U- shaped yoke which passes through the swiveling-eye a in the upper end of the inclined support or post. The lever C being pivotally mounted in said yoke, it will be apparent that said lever may be rocked either upon a horizontal axis or upon a vertical axis by reason of the yoke and swiveled eye a forming a universal joint between the lifting and weighing lever and the inclined post or support.
The rear end of the lever Chas attached thereto a weighing-lever or scale-beam F by means of an interposed chain E. A short section of chain depends from the lower side of the scale-beam, and is provided at its lower end with a hook f, upon which is secured a sling G. The sling G comprises a central spacing bar or rod g, tothe ends of which are sccured a pair of ropes which converge therefrom to and are connected at their adjacent ends with an oppositely-disposed pair of rings g. The sling thus constructed is adapted to be passed. around a quantity of cotton or other material, and then applied to the pendent hook f of the scale-beam by means of the eyes g in a well-known manner.
The lever C at its forward or opposite end is provided with an operating-chain D, provided at its lower end with a ring d and at or near said lower en d with a hook d2, by means of which the lower end of the chain D maybe secured to the rim or spokes of one of the wheels of the wagon, or to any other convenient point during the process of weighing the cotton or other material. At a convenient point intermediate the ends of the chain D the latter is provided with a handleloop (l, by means of which the forward end of the lever C may be depressed while the lower end of said chain is bein g engaged with some part of the wagon for holding the lever in horizontal position while weighing the cotton.
In operation the chain D is freed from its connection with the wagon, allowing the rear end of the lifting-lever C to descend for the purpose of receiving a quantity of cotton or other material. After the sling G is passed around the cotton, the rings g thereof are engaged with the pendent hook f of the scalebeam, and the lifting-lever C is then operated by means of the chain D and its attachments and locked in position by the means hereinbefore described during the operation of weighing. After the weight of the cotton or other material has been ascertained, the lever C is vibrated horizontally until the cotton or other material is brought into a position above the wagon-body, when by unhooking one of the rings g of the sling the cotton is dumped into the wagon.
When it is desired to remove the loading and weighing attachment from the wagon, all that is necessary to be done is to disen gage the wire clamping-loop a2 from the tail-gate, when the inclined support or post A, to which all the rest of the apparatus is attached, may be lifted for throwing the pin or stud a out of engagement with the perforation in the wagoniiooring, thereby enabling the whole device to be removed from the wagon.
The device described is very simple and inexpensive in construction, convenient and durable in practice, is capable of being applied to any wagon by simply boring a single hole to receive the pin or stud a at the lower end of the inclined post or standard, and may be quickly placed in position or .removed from the wagon when desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A combined weighing and loading attachment for wagons, comprising an inclined post or support engaging the wagon body at its lower end, a metal eye swiveled in the upper end thereof, a clamping metal frame einbracing said post or support intermediate its ends and adapted to rigidly support the same and to be readily engaged with or disengaged from the tail-gate of the wagon, a lifting lever provided with a metal yoke connected to the\ metal eye in the upper end of said inclined post or support and having at one end a scale beam, and an anchoring chain attached to the opposite end of said lever and having` at its extremity a hook for engaging the wagon, and a loop handle attached to said chain intermediate its ends, whereby said lever may be depressed or operated with one hand and engaged with the wagon by the other hand, substantially as described.
