To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ERSKINE M or- FATT, of Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in supplying-pumps for steam-boilers.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved variable pump-operating mechanism simple and durable in construction and easily operated.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully and particularly described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a feed-Water heater provided with the supply-pump. Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to that of Fig. 1, showing the pump and parts in sections.
In the drawings the reference-letter a indicates a vertical, usually cylindrical, steam feed-water heater. This vertical steam-tank is provided with the pump on its exterior. The pump-cylinder 7o, being longitudinally arranged on the exterior of the tank and bolted directly thereto, and in the present instance having a discharge-pipe Z therefrom to the feed-tank and also having the watersupply pipe m from the source of feed-water supply. 0 indicates the reciprocating piston of said pump and cylinder, reciprocating in a vertical plane and provided with the guide p, bolted to the tank and arranged above the cylinder. Referring to means here shown for reciprocating the piston, 2 is the horizontal driveshaft mounted in suitable bearings at the upper portion of the chamber. This shaft can be provided with a suitable pulley, such as 3, by which the driving-power can be attached. At one end or at the portion of the shaft over the pump the shaft is provided with suitable crank-arm or pulley 4, having the crank-pin as shown. The upper end of the pump piston or plunger is here shown forked, and a suitable forked block or cross-head 5 is pivoted between the arms of the fork by the pin 6, so that said cross-head or block will have a lateral swing independent of the plunger. This cross-head is provided with a suitable horizontal transverse bearing h. 9 is a bar or lever passing through the bearing of said cross-head and arranged to be moved longitudinally therethrough. One end of this lever is provided with a suitable block having an upwardextension 10. 11 is a link at its upper end suitably pivoted to a stationary support and having its lower end suitably pivoted to said block on the end of the lever 9. 12 is a link at itsupper end journaled to the crank-pin of the crank or pulley carried by the drive-shaft and having its lower end forked and pivoted to the outer end of said sliding adjustable lever. It will thus be seen that as the drive-shaft rotates the said sliding bar is rocked on the link 11, as a fulcrum, thereby reciprocating the pump-plunger.
In order to vary the throw of the plunger or to vary the capacity of the pump, suitable means is provided to adjust the said bar through the cross-head. For this purpose a screw-shaft 14. can be provided at one end, journaled loosely in the bearing in the extension 10, and at its opposite portion extending through a screw-threaded opening in an extension 15 from the cross-head. The outer end of this screw-shaft can be provided with a handle 17, so that the shaft can be readily rotated whenever desired to draw the said swinging adjustable lever through the bearing of the cross-head, whereby the cross-head will be drawn closer to or farther from the fulcrumpoint of the lever by moving said point to or from the cross-head. By this construction the said swinging sliding lever is provided with a movable fulcrum.
A suitable saddle 18 can be bolted to the upper portion of the steam-chamber to support the drive-shaft and the fulcrum-link 11.
The inlet and outlet from the pump can be provided with suitable check-valves.
While the pump is operating the stroke of the plunger can be varied by means of shifting the fulcrum of the swinging lever, so that the amount of water fed to the boiler can be "aried as the necessities of the ease requires.
Advantages are attained by providing journal-boxes on the exterior of the vertical tank, and mounting the horizontal drive-shaft in said boxes at the exterior of the tank and transversely or tangentially thereto. Also a more extended stroke and adjustment is at tained by having a fulerunrlink pivoted to one end of the fulcrum-bar and at its upper end pivoted to the tank on a stationary pivot at a distance to one side of said shaft. My invention is confined to these features.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A support having the lateral bearings, the horizontal drive shaft tangential to the support, the vertical pump to one side of the vertical plane of the shaft, the rocking cross head 5, on the pump rod, having parallel smooth and threaded bearings lever 9 in the smooth bearing, having end blocks, the co11- tinuously threaded screw 14 jonrnaled in one block and Working in said threaded bearing, link 12, pivoted to one block and eccentrically connected to said drive shaft, and the link 11, at its lower end pivoted to the other block and at its other end pivoted to the support in about the same horizontal plane as the drive shaft and a distance to one side thereof so that links 11 and 12 are approximately parallel, for the purposes set forth.
