SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,326, dated December 31, 1895.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN W. OSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet Die-Stocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' My invention relates to that class of diestocks employed in cutting pipes, rods, &c.; and it consists of a rotatable head provided with spring-actuated latches arranged to engage and disengage the teeth upon the internal drum of the stock for the purpose of re volving the same, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
The object of my improvement is to provide a diestock with an attachment by means of which said stock is revolved in either directionviz., for a right or left hand thread, by simply oscillating a single lever or handle without making a complete revolution of the same, whereby more power can be applied thereto in less space than when two handles are used.
By means of my device the advantage of convenience of operation is added to the other advantages of greater application of power in restricted quarters, as enumerated above.
My ratchet die-stock is particularly useful in narrow trenches and excavations.
That my invention may be seen and fully understood by others, reference will be had to the following specification and annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a top view of my device; Fig. 2, a top View of the die-stock with the head removed; Fig. 3, a bottom view of the head; Fig. 4, a sectional view on lineman, Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a sectional View of the head on line'y'y, Fig. 1; Fig. 6, a top view of the head, showing the links turned so as to expose the slots below; and Fig. 7, an enlarged sectional view of one of the latches and its connections.
Similar letters and figures designate like parts in the drawings and specification.
The die-stockA shown in the drawings consists of the internal drum 1, the external cylinder 2 connected to said drum by the diaphragm 3, and the arms 4 4 extending from opposite sides of said cylinder to receive the ordinary handles for revolving said stock. The arms at are, however, not at all essential. to my invention, as will appear hereinafter. The diaphragm 3 divides the stock A into two annular chambers,the upper of said chambers being designated by the figure 5 and the lower one by the figure 6. The four dies 7 penetrate the drum 1 from the chamber 6 and are held in place by the disk 8, which is provided with the'handle 8 and the cams S". The cams 8 engage slots in the dies 7 and reciprocate said dies when the disk 8 is turned. The disk 8 is retained in place against the bottom of the cylinder 2 by the ring 9, said ring being secured to the base of the drum 1 by the screws 10.
I make no specific claim in this application to the several parts of the die-stock above described, which are covered by Letters Patent No. 490,676, issued to me January 31, 1893, since my invention described below is applicable to other die-stocks.
Surrounding the periphery of the drum 1 in the chamber 5, and integral with said drum, are the teeth 11,extending from the diaphragm 3 to a level with the top of the cylinder 2. The drum 1 rises above the level of the top of the cylinder 2 to form a bearing for the head B.
The head B consists of the annular plate 12 and the hub-like'proj ection 12,through which and said plate is the central opening 13 of the same diameter as the outside of the drum 1. The plate 12 rests upon the top of the cylinder 2, and the top of the projection 12 is on a level with the top of the drum 1, to which the ring 14: is secured by the screws 15 passing through holes in said ring into the holes 1 in said drum. The ring 14 holds the head B in place, but does not prevent the same from turning upon the drum 1. Depending from the under side of the plate 12, opposite each other, are the two pairs of guides 15, and each latch 16 operates between each pair of said guides. The boss 17 is formed on the top of the plate 12 at one side of the projection 12 and has therein the threaded opening 17 to receive the end of the lever or handle 18, by
means of which the head B is turned in one direction and said head and the stock A in the opposite direction.
The inner end of each latch 16 is beveled at 16, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to permit said latch to be forced back by the teeth 11 when the head B is turned in the right direction. The hole 19 pierces the back of each latch 16 to receive the spring 20, which bears against the inner face of the cylinder 2 and normally presses said latch forward. The stud 21 is rigidly secured to each latch 16, passes upward through the slot in the plate 12 and an opening in the link 23, and terminates in the post 21. The link 23 rests upon the plate 12 and turns about the stud 21. The post 21 is rigidly secured to the end of the link opposite the post 21 and serves as a thumb-piece to facilitate turning said link about the stud 21.
The operation of my device is as follows: Turn the link 23 on the side of the plate 12 marked R (right) until the post 24 is at the outside, as shown in Figs. 1. and i, and the latch 16 marked R is forced forward by the spring 20 to engage the teeth 11, and turn the link 23 011 the side of said plate marked L (left) until the post 245 is at the inside, as shown i 11 Figs. 1 and 1-, and the latch 16 marked L is forced back out of the way between its guides 15 and held there because the end of said link bears against the base of the projection 12. The slots 22 in the plate 12 permit the studs 21 to be reeiprocated and thus move the latches 16. The device is now set to cut a right-hand thread. By turning the head B in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 with the handle 18 as far as the arms can reach convenient-1y, the beveled face 16 of the latch 16 permits said latch to be forced past the teeth 11. Now turn said head in the opposite direction and the straight face of said latch encounters one of said teeth and locks the head and stock together, causing the latter to turn with the former.
It will be readily seen that a continued repetition of the movement just described will.
quickly cause the dies 7 to cut a thread of the desired length upon a pipe properly inserted between said dies and that less space is required in which to operate the handle 18 than to manipulate handles inserted in the arms 4, while more power may be exerted upon the former by a single man than upon the latter.
To set my device for cutting a left-hand thread simply reverse the positions of the links 23 and the latches 16.
The size and location of the guides 15 on the head B are such as to allow said guides to freely traverse the interior of the chamber 5.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a die stock having a central toothed drum, a rotatable head having a central opening to receive the upper part of said drum and provided with the depending guides 15, and the spring-actuated beveled latches 16 between said guides, arranged to alternately engage the teeth surrounding said drum, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a die stock having a central toothed drum, a rotatable slotted head having a central opening to receive the upper part of said drum and provided with the depending guides 15, the spring-aetuated beveled latches 16 between said guides, adapt-- ed to engage the teeth surrounding said drum, the studs 21 passing upward from said latches through the slots in said head and terminate ing in posts, and the links havingthe posts 2i turning upon said stud posts above the head plate, arranged to reciprocate and hold said latches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a die stock having a central toothed drum, a rotatable slotted head having a central opening to receive the upper part of said drum and provided with the depending guides 15 and the perforated boss 17 to receive the end of a lever, and the spring-actuated beveled latches 16 between said guides, arranged to alternately engage the teeth surrounding said drum, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
