:PECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,834, dated May 2, 1893.
7 Application filed December 27, 1892. Serial No. 456,457. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. LANDIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Bicycle-Handles, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bicycle handles, in which an adjustable handle for guiding the machine when in operation, takes the place of a stationary or fixed handle, enabling the rider to comfortably occupy different and desired positions when riding. I attain this by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1. is a front view, and Fig. 2. is a side view.
A, is a T connection, with a tubular excavation B in its upper part, wherein the metallic handle is inserted and made secure thereto by brazing. A may be cast, or it may be made from a solid piece of metal by drilling or milling therein the hole B to such a diameter as will neatly admit the circumference of the bar forming the handle.
G is a fulcrum-screw by which the different angles of the bar are arrived at, and is constructed as a double-screw that the lost motion occurring from constant use may be easily taken up.
D isaplunger, operated vertically by means of the threaded screw E.
F is a coil or spiral spring, which makes the I H is a circular-swivel with a number of notches Lin its surface into which the plunger D enters and fits, thereby locking itself when the desired angle is arrived at.
I is an excavation or hole in the circularswivel H by which it is ful'crumed on the screw G.
J is a tubular upright, connected with the body of the circular-swivel H by being brazed which different angles are arrived at, and a circular swivel containing one or more notches by which the angles are made secure and positive, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, at Columbus, Ohio, this 23d day of December, A. D. 1892.
WILLIAM J. LANDIS.
