SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,314, dated December 31, 1895.

Application filed April 22, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY A. BROWNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention consists in the construction of a support for the colter of a plow, whereby it is pivotally supported between the clipplate and the plow-beam, and held against accidental movement by the clamping of the clip-plate, which friction may be adjusted by an adjusting-screw to any desired degree, all as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings,Fig ure 1 is a side elevation of a plow, showingmy invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged, side elevation showing the clip and colter. Fig. 3 is a section on line x on, Fig; 2, showing the clip-bolt in elevation.

A is the plow-beam. B is the colter. O is a U -shaped clip-bolt, embracing the plowbeam and its ends passing through the clipplate D, the colter being adapted to be clamped between the clip-plate and the plowbeam by adjusting the nuts E. These parts are of well-known and usual construction, except as hereinafter set forth. In using such construction the colter is held in place by the friction of the parts described, and hence can have no pivotal motion and may accidentally be adjusted vertically, as by striking a stone or other obstruction. My improvement overcomes these objections, and without materially increasing the cost or complication of the construction.

F is a screw having a squared head G and engaging a screw-threaded bearing in the clipplate. At its inner end the screw is provided with the pin portion H, which passes through Serial No. 546,683. (No model.)

an aperture I in the top of the colter and bears with its inner end against the face of the plowbeam, as plainly shown in Fig. 3.

It is evident from the description given that the colter may turn about the pivot-pin H. In case the lower end of the colter strikes a stone or other obstruction, it may spring forward and up, turning on the pivot-pin, and thus escape injury. The tension on the colter may be adjusted to a nicety by means of the screw, which, in being turned in, will tend to spring the clip-plate away from the colter, and thus reduce the friction, and yet, no matter what adjustment the tension or friction may be given, the pivoting effect of the colter will.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination with the plow beam, the colter, and a clip for clamping the colter upon the beam, and means for diminishing the clamping efl'ect of the beam and clip upon the colter, substantially as described.

2. The combination with the plow beam, the colter and a clip-for clamping the colter upon the beam, of a pivot pin passing through the colter and adapted to separate the clip plate and plow beam, substantially as described.

3. The combination with the plow beam, the colter and a clip for clamping the colter upon the beam, of a screw engaging through the clip plate, and a plain pin portion on its end passing through an aperture in the colter bearing against the plow beam to form a combined pivot and tension device for the colter as described.
