Description

NTTe STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
GEORGE L. DAUM, OF BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HERMAN A. DOSTER. OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAFT-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,198, dated May 29, 1866.
To all whom tt may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE L. BAUM, of Bethlehem, Northaml'iton county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaft-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forming part ot' this Specication, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view ot' in v improved shaft-coupling, taken through the lineyy, Fig. 2, part of the shaft being broken away. Fig. 2 is a cross-section ot' the same, taken through the line a' 01;, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the key. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the shaft.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a shaft-conpling simple in construction, easy of] adjustment, and which will hold the shaft' sevcurely coupled; and it consists of ashaftcoupling formed by combining a shell, key, and set-screws with the ends of the shaft to be coupled, as hereinafter more fully described.
A and B are the ends of the shaft to be coupled, in the sides of which is formed a slot, O, the ends of which are deepened into holes c, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
D is a key fitting into the slot O, as shown in Fig. 1. This key is wider than the depth of the slot, and at its ends are formed projections d, fitting into the holes c, formed in the l ends of the slot C. This key prevents the ends ofthe shaft from being drawn apart and also insures both parts of the shalt revolving together.
E is the shell which tits upon the shaft, covering the joint formed by the meeting ot' the shafts A and B.
lt should be observed that the bottom of the slot O-is slightly inclined-that is, the said slot is deeper at one end than at the other-which gives to the projecting part Aof the key D a wedge-shaped appearance, as seen in Fig. 1. Upon the inside of the shell E is formed a groove, as shown in Figs. l and L'. This groove fits over the key D, clamping the key and ends ofthe shaft irmly together. This shell is kept from slipping' from its place by 'set-screws F, which pass in through the side of the shell E and press against the ends A and B of the shaft, as shown in Fig. 1. These holes are eountersunk, so that the heads of the screws F may be beneath the outer surface of the shell E, and thus be out oft-he way and not liable to catch upon the belting.
l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved shaft-coupling formed by combining the shell E, key D, and set-screws F with the ends of the shafts to b e coupled, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
GEO. L. BAUM. Vitnesses FRED. R. BARKER, BENJ. F. SOHNELLER.
