Be it known that I, FRED KUBEO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention consists primarily in providing an improved construction of lock (particularly well adapted for the doors of closets, wash-rooms, or the like) the bolt of which has combined therewith independent arbors provided with means whereby said bolt may be operated from opposite sides of the door, and means controllable by one of said arbors for preventing the operation of said bolt by the other arbor.
My invention consists, also, of various novel features of construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure l is a view in side elevation of a lock embodying my invention, the outer case of the lock being removed to expose the parts,
this view being taken from the side of the lock to be hereinafter designated as the outside. Fig. 2 is a view from the opposite side of the lock, the casing beingshown in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal section through the lock-casing above the bolt, the easing being shown in position upon a door and being shown as provided with operating-knobs for controlling the bolt. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the bolt in locked position.
A designates a lock-casing of suitable construction wherein is mounted a bolt B in manner free to move back and forth, the end of the bolt B projecting through a slot formed in the front edge of the casing. It will be understood, of course, that the easing A Will be furnished with a cover A that serves to close the casing and retain parts in position The casingA is preferablyalso furnished with a transverse rib or web a having a slot to receive a bolt B. Within the casing A and at one side of the bolt B is mounted a rocking arm C preferably carried by the arbor d of the inside knob D. The upper end of this rocking arm C is formed with a slot c to engage a pin or stud b projecting laterally from the bolt B. It will be readily seen that by means of the rocking arm C, the knob D and its arbor d the bolt B can be shot and retracted in the usual manner. Upon the opposite side of the bolt B and within the casing A is mounted a rocking arm E preferably carried by the arbor f of the knob F.
In the preferred form of my invention the rocking arm E is provided at its upper end with an open slot e so arranged that when the rocking arm E is turned to la retracted position the rocking arm will be disengaged from the stud or pin Z9" that projects laterally from the side of the bolt B. Preferably a spring G that is conveniently attached to the casing A has its free end bearing upon the edge of the rocking arm E and serves to normally hold it in the position shown in Fig. l when the bolt is retracted, and by preference also the upper edge of the bolt B is furnished with notches b2 and b3 adapted to be engaged by a suitable spring H so as to retain the bolt against accidental movement when it has been thrown to the locked or unlocked position. From the side of the bolt B projects a lug or dog b4 that will serve to retain the rocking arm E in the position shown in Fig. l when the bolt B has been thrown to the locked position by the rocking arm C.
From the foregoing description it-will be seen that if the bolt B be in the retracted position shown in Fig. l it may be thrown to the locked position by either the knob D or F and their corresponding rocking arms C and E. Y The knob D will be upon the inside of the door and it will be seen that if this knob be operated so as to turn the rocking arm C from the position shown by full lines to the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. l, the bolt B will be thrown to the locked position. It will be observed also that when the bolt is thus thrown the lug or dog b4 will come above the rocking Y arm E and consequently this rocking arm E and the knob F cannot be operated to retract the bolt B; but the bolt B may be freely retracted by the rocking arm C and the corresponding knob D. When the IOO parts are in the position shown in Fig. l by full lines, the bolt B can be thrown to the locked position by the knob F and rocking` arm E can be retracted from such locked position, as the shoulder e at the inner edge of the slot e swinging upon the arc shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4 will engage the stud b/ to retract the bolt. l
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A lock comprising the combination with a bolt, of independent arbors provided With means whereby said bolt may be operated from opposite sides of the door, and means controllable by one of said arbors for preventing the operation of said bolt by'thejotlier arbo r, snbstantially as described. i 2. In a lock, the combination with a bolt, of an arm arranged to engage the bolt at one side, an independent arm arranged to engage the bolt at the opposite side, independent turning devices for said arms and means for clogging or preventing` the actionv of one of said arms to prevent the bolt being operated thereby, said means being controllable by the other of said arms, substantially as'described. 3. In a lock, the combination With a bolt, of an arm C and a suitable arbor for turning said arm yto operate the bolt, and an independent arm E and an arbor for operating said arm E and. a projection b4 Afor preventing vided With a slot c at its free end, an arbor f 45 for operating said arm E and a projection b4 on the bolt for preventing the operation of the arm E after the bolt has been turned to the looked position by the arm C, substantially as described.
6. In a lock, the combination of a bolt B having the studs b and b projecting from its opposite sides and having a lu g or projection b4 adjacent its rear end, an arm C engaging With a stud h, an arbor d for operating said arm C, an arm E having an open slot at its end adapted to receive the stud b as the arm E engages said stud, and an arbor ffor operating said arm E, substantially as described.
